I know it’s going to differ somewhat from state to state, but who are you liking for insurance rates/coverage/service right now?
I’ve been with State Farm for 30+ years but I’m finally thinking about switching. I would prefer to keep everything bundled together.

I stuck with State Farm and my original agent, even long after moving hours away, because he was a great agent/man and I trusted him. He retired four or five years ago and corporate transferred my account to a more local agent to my current location. I feel like I’m now paying a premium price for less than premium service. I’ve been trying to get a quote for coverage on a new tractor. They’ve been making it way more difficult than it should be. They want a bill of sale, pictures and prices on tractor and any implements purchased with it. I just want a quote.

We use American Family Insurance, which is also called AmFam. I am sort of ambivalent towards them. They do an adequate job and have adequate pricing. They are a pain to get roadside assistance from. The only claim we ever had, was earlier this year. The representative they put over our claim was out of the office every time we called, but one. Their other representatives took care of our problems. Our settlement was reasonable, if not as high as I wanted.

If you're young and have a good family, I'll share something that may work for ya.
I worked with a fella that had a family that did their own home owners insurance. His family each chipped in 10k, put into some kind of savings account. This was in the early '80's.
This money was to be used if any of their houses burnt down. I told him it sounded like what the Amish do, and he said that's where they got the idea. They were saving around 200-250 a year each at that time plus gaining really good interest on their 80k they had in.
They have a name for this arrangement. Perhaps, it will come to me after awhile?

I have gotten to where I usually handle disputes that are headed for the courts if they are not handle correctly and I can tell you this: There are only a hand full of insurance companies that I routinely deal with working the "plaintiff side". State Farm, Allstate, Am Fam, Travelers, and Mercury.
Take that for what it is worth.

If you have not had a claim in the past 3 years, you are in the driver's seat. If you have had a claim/accident, you are at their mercy. There are lots of options available and I, firmly believe, your local independent agent will offer the best options, unless you live in a hurricane zone. I can't speak to that. I have worked as a captive agent for Shelter and did a short stint at an independent agency. Spoke with a few former claims adjusters for State Farm, recently. They didn't have many good things to say about their recent employer. Many times, small, local companies can provide better rates because they are not exposed to the huge risks of hurricanes and earthquakes on the coasts.
