Got some of these in the lot of traps I bought off a fella at a flea market who had literally a truck bed load of used traps for $2 each a year ago, I think there's 4 of them I have, wondering what they are neccessarily good for, they are good and strong and I love my longsprings, but idk if I'd want to set them on land where I'd have a chance at catching coyote.
May tear them apart just make 2 double longsprings out of them

what is a 2.5 LS?
a No.3 with one spring removed?
Never seen a pan stamped 2 1/2

Boco - you need to get out more

Original B&L #2 1/2 long springs had a pan stamped 2 1/2. Post pan. Lock link chain. Rounded spring end. You could buy them brand new in the early 1970s.

It is a #3 size trap but it came with only one spring from the factory. The jaws were asymmetrical so it was not possible to add a spring. When ATCo started making B&L traps, they made the 2 1/2 with symmetrical jaws, so it was easy to add a spring.

Marketed as an otter trap if I remember it right.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Used to be popular with people from Oklahoma. If I recall they have/had to put up a sign when using traps with more than a single spring or something along those lines. I was able to sell pretty much all of them I could come by to the folks there.

I've found a few of these out in the bush on old traplines. It's a #3 long spring but with just one spring, I believe they used a #4 spring as it's beefier than a #3 spring. They were marketed as an otter trap but they were used up here for lynx.

Back in the day @ 1974, I ordered a #3 B&L coil spring
from the Eddie Bauer Fur Company mail order trapping
supply house out of Illinois.

Had saved up my money to buy it to use
on my small trap line for coon, etc.

A box finally arrived in the mail and boy was I excited.

Tore open the package and much to my dismay discovered
a # 2 1/2 B&L single long spring that I could not set
instead of the #3 B&L coil spring I had ordered.

There was also a note saying that #3 coil springs were
out of stock and the #2 1/2 long spring had been substituted
in it's place.

Needless to say, I was a disappointed 14 Y.O. boy stuck with
a trap that I did not order & could not use.

It was the last time I did business with Eddie Bauer Fur Company !!! mad

That trap proved to be cursed as a few years later when I was
finally strong enough to set it, it was always sprung & empty
when I checked it and I never caught even one fur bearer with it.

Interestingly, I finally rid myself of that worthless, accursed piece of steel
when I sold it recently for $5.00 at the Camp Zerbe Rendezvous.

Glad to be rid of that jinxed, bad news piece of trapping Iron.

Nice story but to the best of my knowledge, B&L never made a #3 double coil spring trap. Not listed in any catalog I’ve ever seen.

I'm remembering back around 49 years so
It may well not have been a B&L #3 coil spring
so probably was a Victor #3 coil but then, that's
how my dementia addled memory recalls it. laugh

B&L made a #2 double coil. But I couldn't find a # 3.

By the late 1970's, I had numerous #1 1/2 and #2 B&L coil springs
for fox trapping but by then I knew enough that I did not need a #3
coil spring to trap & hold coon and fox.

To this day I don't have hardly any #3 coil springs in my inventory.

In hind sight, maybe Eddie Bauer Fur Company did me a favor
by inadvertently steering me away from #3 coil springs.
