Like the indiginous woman in tepee with little one crawling on ground going near center fire. Fellow was going to grab little one to keep fm fire. Woman said no the little one will learn and then stay away.

My youngest son when a wee lad was told not to put his hand on the still hot burner of an electric stove. Being the type of kid he was he went ahead and did it anyways. He never did that again and I suspect listens better than before.

Back in the day, parents would put their child's hand in the fire , so they learned it hurt.
There wasn't medical help for 100's of miles , better to hurt them , than to see them die a terrible death.

When my first grandson was born I told his dad that his job wasn't to keep his son from getting hurt, his job was to keep the kid from getting seriously hurt. Getting hurt is a teaching tool.

When my first kid was born in 77 we had a VW Beatle. He grabbed both exhaust pipes,at the same time. Why I don’t know. Worst blisters I have ever seen. Probably an inch high. He doesn’t even remember now. He was 2 or 3 at the time.

Yes, we are ALL too soft...myself included!

I suppose this could also apply to kids.......“There are three kinds of men. The ones that learn by readin’. The few who learn by observation.
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” Will Rogers

Kids are kids , they don't know , so they try or explore.
Your job is to protect them as best as you can.
Same as spanking them when needed.
Sad we let the government tell us how to raise our children.

I have to admit to warning my kids of dangers but when I see them proceeding in said actions anyway I let them continue if it's not going to kill them or seriously disable them. When they were younger they would come back crying. My response even when I knew. What happend ( fhey explain while crying) didn't I tell you not to do blank becuse that could happen ( ,yes ) and you did it any way( yes) so do I need to spank you or ground you for not obeying?

I call those teachable moments.

it still happened , my great great uncle died as a toddler , because he some how tripped and fell in/on the scald pot when they were getting ready to butcher hogs.

took a few days but the burns got him he was the youngest and my great great grandmother had already passed when he was an infant.
it was still years later till antibiotics were discovered.
