Well, as if it wasn't enough of a failure last time, they are now re-re-introducing the coyote hybrids in North Carolina

"Under a settlement finalized Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will consider releasing endangered red wolves from captivity into Northeastern North Carolina annually until at least 2030. Conservation groups that sued the federal agency in 2020 see the settlement as a key step in re-establishing an endangered species that had dwindled to as few as seven wolves in the wild in recent years. There are between 32 and 34 red wolves in the wild now, according to the FWS, with 278 in captivity"

If you are unfamiliar with this and want to know why this project is a complete failure and waste of $30,000,000 of federal funding, see link below

The feds won't be happy until they make all of eastern NC

a red wolf sanctuary and prohibit hunting and trapping.

For what it's worth, there is a definite benefit to wolf populations in their former habitat. This does impact the trapper for certain, but this is the long game. Look to Yellowstone as an example. The wolf population has caused a significant amount of regeneration along streams and other ecosystems that if the elk/ mule deer populations stayed at the levels they once were would have never occurred. There is a benefit to this.

To a person ignorant of nature, his country stroll is a walk through a gallery filled with wonderful works of art with their faces turned to the wall

They don't allow hunting in Yellowstone or else the wolf wouldn't be needed

There is no benefit to this reintroduction, red wolves were

never a hardy specie, they were bred out by coyotes

Time for me to exit stage left, too many ignorant people on here

JC, there are no red wolves. They were declared extinct in 1980. We are not talking about wolves out west, we are talking about genetically engineered super coyotes being dropped off in Eastern NC. There is no benefit to that. They will continue to interbreed with coyotes and be shot and this project will fail just like the last one.

The major factor here is snowflakes ! Red Wolves have been extinct

for a long time, not by over hunting or trapping but from interpreting with coyotes

They were bred out of existence, they are gone forever !

The snowflakes don't want to believe that....but it's the truth

Why ? You are 100% correct. Don't forget the ones being released are inbred too.

Never argue with a fool - they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

You don't have anything to worry about as long as your replies are not mean spirited.

So after reading the article a couple things stand out. Wolves kill elk to eat, but leave plenty for bears emerging from hibernation. So they kill and get a meal out of it and move on to kill again for just another meal.

It’s also implied that management of a species is needed, like every sportsman doesn’t already know that. Elk needed managed, but instead of making millions by offering tags to hunters to shoot a famed elk in Yellowstone, they spent millions, which at first glance seems to have reduced elk numbers. What’s yet to be seen is how low the numbers will go and what else they’ll reduce…cattle, sheep, etc.

Looks like they’re going to try the same thing in NC. I just hope they don’t roam to far South, lol. If so Swamp may start skinning “coyotes” lol.

JMO, but there never was any such thing as a red wolf. At least not as a stand alone genetically isolated species.

Sure there were red colored larger than western coyote canines in the southeast but there were also black ones as well.

IMO, they were just a population of canines somewhere on the gene flow between wolf and coyote and I personally do not consider those two as fully separate species since they are not genetically incompatible yet.
