Is it worth installing an engine in a "84" toyota straight cab 4x4 pickup. It is in pretty rough shape with flatbed and replacement engine or overhaul would need to be farmed out.

How is the frame, do you use it a lot, it the cost to buy something else that meets your needs the same price or 2x higher or more? I generally fix things well past the point I should have got ride of them from a financial stand point. But the repairs I normally do spread out and they cost less all at once so it seems lie I'm geting by saving money.

Of course it's not let me know where it's parked and I'll come and get it and take it off your hands ha ha

You have to be kidding right ???? I'd put another motor in it just because you can't hurt it just add premium no lead without ethanol and keep going .

My 86 , 4 runner still has less than 200,000 miles on it .
I'm sure folks get a good laugh watching me get into or out of it but that's ok with me when we had that freak spring snow storm I was one of the few who was out driving busting through the drifts to get to the gas station for fuel for the snow plow ha ha

Yeah frame is good and will be using to run to ranch, hunting and fishing won't use it all the time. I called a guy on it tonight he said he would let me know what he wants for it.

It would be a great knock around back country truck but would need to stick some money into it to be dependable. Ones in good shape with a lot of miles on them are worth a bunch.

If the fame is solid it's cheaper than buying used and you know what you've got..

Couldn't help but to respond to your post
I have a 1984 Toyota also I was going to upgrade a couple of years ago but the price was crazy
So I have replaced the motor and now have ordered old man emnu suspension for it
The truck is perfect for the back country and my trap line
If it is good shape you are money ahead to fix it up will last a long time with the straight axles

Just to upgrade a few years with high mileage is absolutely crazy for prices on vehicles. If I can get it cheap, I will buy it.

Question what would be a fair price for it not running, anyone??

Don't know what your definition of "rough" is but rough and not running I would want to be $1000 or less

Axles alone will nearly bring that. Those Toyota straight axles are hard to find and sought after to put under Samurais and rock buggies

Buy a truck with a bad frame and good engine, have someone swap engines keep the rest for parts. I bought a 87 that was busted in half for $200, took the snowplow off and sold it for $200

Thank you guys for the advice. I was thinking about that price range and I'm hoping he is in that price range.

Just figure what sales tax and licensing alone would cost on a different pickup. And you still don't know what problems are lurking on a vehicle you don't know.

I had a lot of buddies who ran those little Toyotas off road and swore by them. These guys checked well heads, pump Jacks, and tank batteries up in the Flint Hills of Kansas meaning 3/4 of every trip was out in a desolate pasture and this was way before cell phone coverage in those areas.

They said that 1) they basically lasted forever and 2) that you could work on them yourself. Try to find a modern 4WD you could say that about...

Just food for thought

I have 3 dead tacos on my place now. They don't all interchange. 99, 95 and 93. The 93 If remember right has a 3.0 and is the worst IMO engine they ever made. Bad about blowing head gaskets. For me the 22E was the best I had. The 99 developed a crack in the plastic radiator. Put in a new radiator and got about 100 miles on it before the radiator drain valve malfunctioned and cracked a head. Orileys said they would replace the radiator but the rest was my problem. To pull 2 engines and install one ready to go I was quoted $800.

Do your research before you commit.

It looks like a guy can still get the 22E any way Ii think you can. That is what this "84" one has.
