What is your favorite lure and bait for Bobcat and coyote. I know there is no straight answer to this question and tons of product on the market as well as individuals personal favorites. I am just trying to find a good starting point with some really successful lures and baits. This subject has become confusing and I would rather have solid input then just throwing stuff in and hoping for the best. Thanks for any feedback.

I have always had good luck with Dakota prairie predator bait and powder river paste bait. For lures I have had success with several of mark junes lures and also cavens lures.

Those in my opinion would be a good starting point

Powder River Paste Bait is hard to beat. Doesn't take much.

Bob I just bought my first pint of Dakota prairie predator bait. I try to run something new every year or so to keep changing up. My go-to baits for coyotes have been Grahams cat creek and also Keg Creeks showtime.
I have had great success on both of those consistently. Bruce Rhoads baits would be my third choice.
Cavens MN valley is a good one too. Not as loud as his Hiawatha valley but same ingredients. MN valley killed a lot of coyotes for me for many years here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

The lures & baits I list have for years consistently given me the highest catch-to-use ratios.
Lures
Pros Choice (test before using because some years vintages such as 2019 can be crap, if you ever find older yellow labeled, buy it!)
Plenty Coyote
OLL-CC
Missouri Breaks
Backbreaker Skunky
Moonshot

Baits
Horse Whisperer Plus II
Coyote Creek
Widow Maker
Bacon Bait (with extra additives)
Beaver Medley

If using any of the above lures & baits in combination at sets be aware that some will compliment each other better than others.

There are so many that are good, and don't use a lot anymore, but my go to (in no particular order) are made by Jim Geffert (Night Owl Lures), John Graham Fur Country Lures) and Bob Jameson (Jameson's Ultra Blend). I'm not saying they are the best for everyone, but they give me a lot of confidence in my sets.

No experience with bobcats but for coyotes (long before Mark June or recent promo's), muskrat for bait and any mammal blood for a lure. Make my own but won't discount anyone's mixes as several commercial ones will work just fine. Coyote intestine is an awful good lure for me too......................... the mike

I appreciate all the info and advice. Gives me a starting point to add to what I already have. Could use some more Bobcat suggestions as they are my primary target. Secondary is coyote.

I don’t use bait for bobcat. I basically blind set, and use a touch of lure on either side of the set. Two different lures, always. Feline fix, violator 7, cat-man-do, super cat, gusto, all are good options and I’m sure there are plenty more.

I set so that as a cat approaches the set, he comes to one lure at nose height, can sniff it and rub on it, then has to walk over the trap to sniff the second one. The key with bobcats is to put your trap where it already wants to walk. Thousands of cats have been caught in this country with nothing more than a heavily guided trap on the right trail, no bait, no lure, nothing at all.

Castoreum is my favorite lure, and Beaver meat is my favorite bait.
Fish oil and sardines is good lure and bait for early season trapping before the deepfreeze.

Where I trap at in South Louisiana and Mississippi for bait you can’t beat Apple Road. The bobcats love it! Coyotes love it. I’ve caught mink and coon using Apple Road predator bait, it’s a really good all around bait.

Thank you for your input. The method you describe is very similar to what I have been attempting. Just have not had much success yet. I also use cubbys a lot. All sets have received attention just not sure what kind. Coons digging up set perhaps skunk. Going to put cameras on some of my sets this year.

I will try some of the lures you mentioned along with some of the other suggestions. Thought I would test some of them prior to season. Guy could go broke if he got carried away on all the different selections. LOL.

Still working on my lack of success. I know they are in the area. Jumped one mousing around hay bales this past fall, shot another with a crossbow and killed my biggest with a rifle during deer season while it was trying to kill a deer. Also shot one with a shotgun. Cats are here.

Where you are may be totally different, but here the females and kittens stick to rougher, higher country with good cover, and the big toms are more bold and will often venture down into the low country to hunt along the edges where tall brush meets open terrain. They like to walk along the top of washes on the high side, and up against rock walls. The best bobcat trappers in the state are using all blind sets with exposed traps like I described. Bobcats are simple to catch once you figure out their travel routes. They’re not the brightest crayon in the box, so don’t get too caught up in all the best lures, best color of trap, etc.

I talked to a guy who caught 147 bobcats last year and his sets are all just very simple blind sets with an exposed trap, no pan cover or anything, just a black trap set in the middle of the trail with lots of guiding and blocking.

Beaver castor works well on many species for me and is a good change up for a coyote at least it has been in my experience

I would think a cat is a cat. But I am in the East where it is fairly flat and extremely brushy and dense. Blind sets will surely work. However, how you set traps in the West and your method may not work as well in the East. I don't know.

Now there are places in the Blue Ridge that have rocky outcroppings and hold cats and I will try some blind walk throughs up there after I finish up with the flat lands. Will see how it goes. I also use bait in a couple of cage traps and while I have not caught any cats I do catch plenty of possums. I like to get rid of the nest raiders when possible. We have a lot of Turkeys here.

I have heard nothing but good things about beaver. I have been trying to get one for bait and lure. However, so far have not had any luck. Would prefer fresh beaver if possible.

If you use cages and want a bait that last that will catch everything from possums to cats, try an egg. Just a plain ole store bought egg will work. It might take a few days after placing it before it starts giving off an odor, but it does work. The only thing we haven’t caught is a coyote in a cage, but fox and bobcats are common. Think my sons best day was 3 cats. Granted they have probably 75+ out, but still 3 cats in one day is pretty good and that doesn’t count the coons and possums that day.

An egg? I would never have thought of that but it makes a lot of sense. Might even work in a cubby.

Preserved beaver, nutra or deer meat cubed up with no extras.I've tried some of the commercial baits but that was expensive and I was having the same results.
