Lord knows I have plenty. last year, we grew over 100 heads of 2-3 pound cabbages. To save on space, I decided to grow only a few dozen of some larger varieties this year. I've grown the OS cross before, but I'm always amazed to see cabbages this big. Not to mention, I enjoy everyone stopping by to see the massive plants and talking about gardening. We usually make sauerkraut, golabki , lazanki, bigos, and more. Last night, we picked 2 cabbages weighing in about 50 pounds total. We chopped 25 pounds for sauerkraut, so it should be ready in 2 weeks. I still have about 1-2 dozen cabbages left in the garden. If you've not grown the OS cross cabbage before, I suggest you try it. I've personally seen these cabbages weigh more than 30 pounds each.

Wow. Are they hard to grow? I've never tried growing cabbage.

Great size and not splitting either! My variety splits easy, I need to research my options I have 6 heads shreaded that are in the crock now for 3-4 weeks. The batches I made 4 years ago were great. I am having more trouble the last two years keeping the molds down or the batch going bad on me.

They are not hard to grow at all. I start them inside early, move them to the greenhouse. As soon as I can get them planted, they go into the ground. We fertilize them 1-2x a month with homemade fertilizer, and utilize row covers as our main protection against pest. We did get some that split, but I'm 99% sure it was from the golf ball sized hail that damaged a couple heads causing them to split.

This was one of the (I presume) hail damaged splits, top center of the cabbage. Not the normal split we would typically see which is why I am thinking it was caused by the hail. Still, it was over 19 pounds.

I usually pick my cabbage off the side of the road. There is a thousand+ acres of cabbage grown in my township every year. Very common for a few to roll off the wagons going to the packing plant. Roadkill cabbage tastes great!

Cabbage is one of the easiest veggies to grow if you can keep the bugs off of them and have the cool temps they love.

It's a fall winter spring crop down here.

Used to plant the megaton hybrid it yielded very well, when we had extra you couldn’t give them away.

Runzas, Kraut and coleslaw are excellent. We opted for squash this year. No garden fresh cabbage for us. frown

I got to know how you get the kraut done in 2 weeks. It always take 4 or more for it to really ferment well.

We like the flavor and still crisp texture of the kraut around 14-15 days. It does get softer and more pungent the longer it ferments.
