market this year...?

I know a supposed definition of insanity is doing the same dumb thing over again and expecting different results but does anyone see any possible improvement in the market for good quality coon?? The place where I have my "wild gardens" I haven't trapped since 2019 (I think) and I see some big ole coon tracks in the field trails. I'd love to put up some nice 4xl masked bandits in the second half of November or early December but no way excited at $5 (or less) averages. I still have a bunch of cleaned up skulls in various shapes of being done so there's always a bit of extra value but given my speed of skinning and fleshing, I could make more money shelling yuppie corn by hand than putting up coon fur.

I'm probably just dreaming of things that won't be...

Imo,, nope. Until the Ukraine/Russia war/dispute or whatever they want to call it gets resolved.. and the Chinese economy improves… coon are going to be as worthless as possums

It is going to take quite a bit of time after the end of the war and politically sanctions may be enforced for a real long time. World is in a low to mild reccession in many areas so I would say we are not looking for much improvement. On the bright side a decent fresh 3-4xl 1st grade decent color coon may be bought for a few more dollars then the same size, quality and color that has been laying around for 3-7 years.

Id say if you are going to trap coon this year, wait until they are fully prime, and target the large ones if that is possible.
Take any and all beaver on your line while you are at it.

Last time I killed coon was 2018-19 season.
Nope ain’t doing it. There’s other varmints to trap that at least fur buyers want.

Whats a fur buyer? Not many left anymore and the ones that are, dont come around much. I dont blame them one bit, lots of risk and they gotta reduce expenses. I sure do miss the days of the line wrapped around the parking lot of a hardware store or truck stop with pickups piled with carcass coon.

I think if the states would allow you to sale raccoon carcasses that would go along way to bring the population down. Here in Iowa the farmers and cattle ranches are over run.
40 coon a night eating out of the feed bunks. what they don’t eat crapping and peeing in feed bunks and ruining the feed they don’t eat. Every night ! A lot of carcasses being sold but under the table. I bet if sales were opened up in all 50 states coon carcasses would sale for $5.00 each frozen. With 7.00 for a pelt then it would be worth it. Ag associations need to put pressure on their state reps to make this Law. Plus I am just surprised that a market cannot be developed for raccoon, per square inch of fur they are very cheap. MD

Carcass sales are legal here but nobody buys or eats them

The people who used to buy and cook coons are about all gone and their kids and grandkids wouldn’t consider cooking anything.

No, not for our Coon .

I'd like to see Mink improve. I see them while fishing and lots of sign so they're getting plentiful.

Like foxkidd44 said, until the Russia/Ukraine deal is straightened out and China's economy improves, along with our relationship with all of the above, its going to be awhile.
In the meantime good coon will be salable, but at less than stellar prices. I think eventually things will improve, but it ain't going to be soon.

Still have to kill a lot of coon here. Have a sweet corn farmer friend who waged war all year round and in season I harvest several off of his ground. Big prime and skinned coon still sellable and at least very easy to catch with the high pops around here. May not be the hay days market but you can move them and while I don’t hit them hard I always take a bunch just because my coyote line is full of them and they help offset some costs. Coon moved last year here when the buyer said don’t bring him any coyotes.
We had a super dry spell last season and the beaver and rats were hard to come by but that’s what fur was moving well. Coon were still a way to make up some difference.
I have to trap coon this year too, my land owners ask me to and while not much of a market there is something there for the better stuff. I wait to set any traps here until December 1st. That is getting away from better weather but the coon are at their best in December and worth the wait.
I haven’t minded carrying coon out the last several years.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

With an adult boar, there's always the added bonus of the cleaned up "swizzle stick"... grin

I would rather skin $8.00 coon then $8.00 coyotes.

NO - only target certain furs that have a market. Coon and certain other furs may be done forever unless you can figure out a way to tan them and sell them yourself.

I don't think the market will ever come back. The cost of preserving hide for coats far exceeds the cost of other alternatives, plus the woke elite are against fur. You would think the environmentalist would like renewable organic fur products instead of products made from oil, but no. I will continue to trap on my farm to help the ground nesting birds.
