Might be a good time to give it a shot this season we had a lot of mornings loaded with dew unlike past summers. That sucks for humans but is great for the birds.
Talked to a couple guys yesterday that have been seeing some hatches of different hatch sizes so you should see birds. Most paid hunting is with released birds now bird hunting the old way is about gone. The opening day orange vested hunter drives with friends/family is gone replaced by maxi vans of paid clients in many places.
The old hunts reminded me of the WI deer drives you would see going down the highways orange everywhere now days drive around you rarely see any people just out pushing birds.

We still push birds with family/friends on our Christmas run. Agreed that you don’t see the old style much anymore. I have a brother in SD and we all get together between Christmas and New Years since a couple are teachers and are off then. Always a good time.

Bird numbers are good. Am in the northeast part of the state. Can show you some good public ground and depending on when you come some good private for 2 to 3 hunters. I hunted pheasants for the first time last year in your area. Lots of good public land and birds. We weren't looking for numbers but I can say, only a "few" birds were harmed. We sure saw a lot. There is a lot of air around them and by December I almost needed a 22 magnum for many of them.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Will a Quail dog suffice for a pheasant dog? Asking for a friend. Quail and pheasants behave differently, but a good dog should be able to adjust.

I would have thought a down year for birds in SD. An early start and late ending winter with several major storms in many areas of the state. Great to hear numbers are good.
I see quite a few broods from both hatches at the ranch. So much cover for them here that seeing what I've seen I think it must have been a pretty go birth rate.

Been looking at flintlock rifles. Haven’t really found one I like. Still learning how to load and shoot this cap smoothbore.
Seen in the regs no lead on public ground in SD. Guess I will stay in KS

All sorts of public land in central SD The key is timing of row crop harvest or weather. I still have not made the call on this years hatch, Fingers crossed Hunters are getting smarter now in the past opening week and the next week we’re the big nut but over the years the smarter ones come later throughout the season and benefit from better opportunities that way. Less competitive issues, less cover that concentrate the birds to what cover that remains, lodging more available and the birds are not spooky like the opening weeks. Crops in the fields, lots of road traffic and warmer weather are not often your friends when chasing birds,
