Craigslist sometimes is worth checking...

Found these 7 cage traps (red checks) a few days ago. Didn't really need them, but couldn't pass em up.

4 - new 11x12x36 SafeGuards
1 - Havahart double door (coon/possum size)
1 - Duke HD Large (like new and painted)
1 - Tomahawk XL (like new)

$250 for all....$35.71/trap.

I'm needing cage traps more and more lately....even though I do very little nuisance work (critters in folk's yard/house, etc). I'm mostly conducting large scale predator management....on large hunting properties.

I'm encountering more coons at deer feeders that will walk right by a DP...but will walk right into a cage....with same bait presentation.

A few more cages means a few more coons (and possums) in the daily pics I send to the landowners/managers.

You are very spot on with coon walking by DP traps but going right into a box trap. A better sale using a cage many times. Plus they do less damage in a cage then in a DP generally speaking.

Funny, a DP is one of my change ups when I get a difficult cage shy one. But these city coons see cages every day not so much a DP.

But my all time favorite is a #11.

Just finished up a raccoon nuisance job. Had 3 cages and 2 DP's set. Took 22 raccoons. If I remember right, DP's only took 6 the rest were in the cages. They seem to be a little more comfortable working the cages.

I did one earlier this summer for a local farmer. 2 cage traps and 5 dp's. DP's hands down with 5 raccoon for every one in a cage with 26 total. I will still use cages as I like to give them options.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Just curious. Did the cages have the same bait as the DP's? What size of cage?

For the most part yes, they did. The only difference was I tossed in a few marshmallows into the cages for added attraction. The cages where 10" x 12" x 36". The DP's that did the best where set right on one of the trails while the cages where more along side the silage pile where they had been ripping holes into the silage bag.

So, you basically intercepted them prior to getting to the damage area. That is the best-case scenario in many cases and is the best location choice. We hammer coon with cages on commercial and residential jobs. As I have stated before Dp's allow too much movement and damage in a more populated area. That movement brings too much attention to what you are doing in those settings. Not a good solution for much of our work. Rural work is a whole different ballgame.
