Going back and forth between Formula one and FMJ to treat snares with. I want my snares to be a darker brown color so I would spray paint first if I use FMJ. Anyone have experience with either? Looking for something that will work good on new snares and weathered snares.

FMJ will hold better if you paint the snares first.

I like either. Just make sure that after they dry you run the lock up and down the snare to make sure the lock is is functioning and you dont have any globs blocking it from closing.

I agree, but Formula One has jumped to over $80/gallon.

That's got me using something different/cheaper.

$80/gallon is just too expensive!

I think I’m leaning a little more towards FMJ since I can control the color of the snares with different paint

Give a little more protection to the snare and I’ve always been a little cautious of straight spraying paint. I’m sure the smell goes away pretty fast but I just can’t quite convince myself.

They paint all kinds of stuff to protect it. Snares will hold up for years with nothing more than paint. F-1 and FMJ both have an odder too. Does the odder from FMJ or F1 go away faster/better? I feel you are adding a step for nothing.

I'm not sure why you think you'd need anything.
except a little paint for color.
The galvanize will last for years but generally a snare is a use it once its done.
just.

Is there a need to put anything on them? I make them and set them. Critters here don’t seem to care.

I'm a Formula One fan, I think blends a little better with the scrub brush in my area.

Well now this is got me rethinking. If your just painting are you leaving them air out for any amount of time? Do you do anything before hand to get the oils off?

You are way over thinking it. Give them a shot of spray paint, hang them and use them. Removing oil from snare cable will make it rust from the inside. You don't need to coat them with paint, just give them enough to change the color. Two to three colors just to break up the outline. You can set snares with nothing done to them and catch fur the first night if you have them in the right place.
