Amazing Sharon!
I have seen more red fox this spring and summer than in the past 15 years. Still lots of coyotes. Saw two yesterday. My first catches were in 1980 got $120.00 each for them.

The money to be made back then.

Gulo, that is a spectacular pic of a cross fox. Kind of a spooking looking critters.

There used to be a huge number of reds in SW Montana in the early 80s. About 20% were cross fox. I trapped up there in mid Oct till Nov 1 for two seasons. The first year I came home with 88 fox total and 15 were cross. Terry Montgomery, a fur buyer in Utah, came to my house in Ogden to look at the fox and some coyotes. He bought the reds for $75 each but told me that the cross fox were worth more but he didn't know how much. He recommended that I send them to Canada. So I did. That sale was called Dominion Sourdack and was later renamed NAFA. The check in the mail came in. The cross fox sold for $4050 or $270 each. I was shocked. I was grateful that the fur buyer did what he did. I would have been happy at $80.

Those huge numbers of red and cross fox in SW Montana disappeared a few years later. All were gone. Mange I was told. Now they are coming back and in two very different environs. Up high, starting at 7000 ft, in the Forest Service lands. And down low in the irrigated pastures.

After a lot of looking I was able to find my favourite pic that I have ever taken. I’m not a heavy hitter like some that have already posted, but it’s what I have.

Few people here bother to trap red fox because legholds have been banned by a EU greenies/fur farm-lobbied law, moreover in my home region they are the key vector of rabies, along with the introduced raccoon dog. Even with our overall not very user-friendly hunting/trapping regulations, most furbearer permits here include 70 red fox, which is our bureaucracy's way of saying "as many as you wish". Some hunters shoot red fox when they have an opportunity, but few even bother to pick them up out of fear of rabies. It's not uncommon to see something like this - a nice big male caught in a bunny snare and just abandoned.

Up north in the taiga belt, red fox are relatively scarce away from big rivers with their wide willow brush floodplains and high bunny numbers. Fox are usually just bycatch in sable traps. Many become very brazen and beg for food along roads in the oil fields, or hang out around landfills. This one followed me around and tried to eat my cranberries and steal my bag. I think I caught it (or a very similar one) a year later in the same spot because it became a muskrat trap thief.

Also, here are a few domesticated and aggressive red foxes from my hometown that a friend works with:

Those fox do tend to get cheeky !

That last pic looks like maybe a crystal colour fox ...I have a hat from that colour and I just love it. Part of it matches my hair tone .

Thanks for the pics and I really liked your video, Tatiana.
