From what I have seen of rats around here, if you trap a few rats they are likely to move. It may not be far, as in from one building to another or they may head across country. Poison seems to have a much better kill rate. Put out several bait stations at once so they can all get some before they figure it out.

I use PB most of the time I had one that would not go near a BP set had the set in an empty brooder house a month later it’s in the newton trap. It had a stubby tail so I knew it was the same one.

I don't think that using just one method to control rats will work on any older farm. I use cats, dogs, trapping, rat poison and shooting to control rats here. New rats will move in from nearby infestations. I can keep rat numbers mostly non-visable, but I still have a small population of rats, that reemerges.

I use Jaguar and Hawk to poison rats. They keep rat populations low, but some old rats won't touch them.

Peanutbutter smashed into a papertowel, threaded through the treadle, works well in box traps. Unbaited conibears work well over holes and in runs. Small legholds work well in holes in the ground.

I've never caught a large rat in a snap trap. I know some people have luck with them, but I have not. They will catch small to medium sized rats okay for me.

Cats work well outside of building, which can't have cats in them because they have birds the cats would consume.

Dogs do a good job killing rats at night in the barns on the floor. Shooting takes out the climbers.

Keith

WCS has a bait called Fearless. I haven't tried it yet but it is supposed to be pretty good. My next farm rat job will start next Friday. I will know more in a few weeks.

Ok, I got a question. Is it Norway rats or roof rats? Roof rats are a pain in the butt.

Do you guys trap around grain? I’m having trouble catching them around grain bins, I’m waiting on trucks and a grain vac to finish getting it move, I’ve had good luck using smoke bombs in there holes when I find them but these are under the bin floor now.
