I saved some pawpaw seeds from some fruit I ate last fall. I planted them in some potting soil and I only had one grow from seed. This is the only seedling that sprouted from the seeds I planted in the pots. This plant is about 4 weeks old and growing quickly. I have never grown pawpaw's before but it sure doesn't look like a tree to me. The stem and stalk is fuzzy like a Pumkin or squash. But it is growing upright. I put a cage and fencing around it since we have lots of deer and rabbits out here. It is about 30" tall now.

I don't think I got any other seeds mixed in with the pawpaw's when I planted the seeds?

Looks like squash leaves to me too, Bob. I read somewhere that you should plant them when they are fresh, just lick them off and plant. They said letting them dry out was no good. I got some a couple years ago, and let them dry, and that was when I read that, so never bothered to plant them!

Can’t see the stem, but the leaves look like hollyhock.

I now believe it may be some variety of squash. It is developing stringlike fingers that are growing thru the fencing to support its weight. This is a strange occurrence. Not sure how this happened.

Bob, pawpaw seeds need to be put in moist soil or another moist substance, soon after being removed from the fruit, or they are very hard to germinate. Once the seeds dry, they mostly will never germinate.

I did put them in the fridge after eating the fruit and stored them until spring in the fridge. I did not know about planting them when fresh or at least keeping them moist until planting. A buddy keeps his seed in moist sand and a peal mix in his fridge.

My first thought was wild cucumber, but I'm no gardener.

I store my Paw Paw seeds in the freezer, but I've found it easier to dig up and transplant a root sprout.

Never seen Paw paw trees as big as in that description! Most of the wild ones in my country, are four to six inches in diameter an fourteen to eighteen high! Would make it much easier to pick the paw paws!
