It identifies birds by picture or sound but I always use the sound ID. Turn it on every morning when I am sitting on my back patio and it ids every bird that makes a sound in the area. Great fun and educational. My best is 28 different birds in one morning. (We have a ton of feeders and houses.). Will pick up ducks and Herons in the creek which is 200 plus yards away. Second the merlin app. Its pretty neat to sit outside and listen to the birds. Spring turkey season was really fun. One note of caution, when you play bird songs with the app, be prepared for the local birds to react. My wife was playing barn swallow songs and very soon she had several diving very close to her.
