Old Herchel Island was quite the party place back in the whaling days.

Thanks, I enjoyed them. like seeing the women with the ulu knife. Alaska special on TV showed that some. Ulu use is still a skill that is widely used.

That it was some really disgustful went on there at that time. But the Inuvaluit and Gwich'in had a solid economy built on whaling and the gold rush to the south. Lots of sailors heard about the gold in the Yukon and made a break for it up the Firth River. i dont think many of them made it. Either caught and brought back by the Captains or lost and frozen in the Crow Flats beyond the Firth River. I read that the Canadian Gov't had to bring in the clergy and RCMP to stop the debauchery and abuse to save the local natives back then.

You had the best tour guide! She really knows her stuff She is a great tour guide. I had the wrong lenses on my camera so I missed some of her knowledge. Had a long lens on so had to stand far back from her.

I doubt they did much to stop any of that. I think the RCMP were brought in more to collect tariffs and show severity. I doubt they did much to stop any of that. I think the RCMP were brought in more to collect tariffs and show severity. They showed severity allright, they put the run on the American Whalers that were abusing the people and brought law and order to a lawless area. Those whalers in the late 1800's were worse than the wild west. There was a great write up in the HBC Beaver magazine of the history of Herschel Island during the whaling era.Lots of old pictures and written accounts. The HBC kept meticulous records. Maybe the mad trapper of rat river was one of those whalers who escaped inland.

I’ve read a few books on his story and that’s an angle that’s never been brought up. You should call Josh Gates and do a show on it…lol

Besides whalling was mostly done by the 1890-1900. The Mad Trapper happened in the 1930s.

The cabin I stay on from time to time is upriver of Alberts place. One year I was out hunting in early may. Looked at 13 bears and seen 9 wolves as well. After a long couple days of being awake I had a good sleep at the cabin. Next morning I was sitting at the table having one last cup of coffee and a smoke before I left. Sled was already loaded and skidoo gassed up. Siri g at the table dead quiet and thinking about the great day I had and all of a sudden I look at the shelf behind the barrel stove and a silver bowl just slid to edge and fell off. I figured maybe condensation between the bowl and shelf caused it but when I walked over the shelf Was dry and angled towards the wall. I put in my jacket and walked out of there without picking up the bowl. I figured if I picked it up it might just fall right back off. I spend a lot of time out by myself so I don’t think of things like that if I can help it. Lucky I don’t scare easily ah Ian? JM cabin has a window on all 4 walls.

Muskrat411 blames my sled being turned around on Albert or windigo. Got to admit I was a bit confused when I first seen it. Then more mad wondering who touched my stuff. When I got to town I opened YouTube and there was Ian’s video showing it was him. I think he said windigo doesn’t leave tracks or something like that.
