I've got an opportunity to buy out a trapper who is quitting, and was wondering how you put a value on traps, and trapping equipment and supplies.
About 400 traps mostly Dukes (#1 coils, #1 LS, 110's clear up to 330's) all no older than 2 years and well taken care of. He wants me to make him an offer I don't want to bag him or myself. Any suggestions?

If all Duke Trap's, I'd go half the cost of new.
I've had some new ones that I got when buying someone out, can't and hard to get $5.00 each out of them.

Got #2's now that are new and have had at 2 conventions and can't sell them.

Unless you're going to use them and need them.

I'd say go for it, nothing wrong with Duke Trap's.

You should check the spring strength on a bunch at random before you make an offer.

All depends on the quantity of each kind of traps. ie.. 110's and 330's are quite far apart in pricing

Are you buying to use them yourself or do you intend to resell them? If you are buying to resell, be very cautious, used trap market is “flooded” right now, especially on newer traps like Dukes.

Why doesn’t he take them to the NTA in Escanaba the end of July. Might get more for them from folks that are looking for good used traps.

I will be keeping most of them for my own use. The #1 cs, #1 ls, the 110 and 120 conibears I have no use for. Individual is moving out of state (to a non trapping state) very shortly, that is why I want to make an offer. The springs are almost (whatever that means) new in strength, and I know that they are only 2 years old from his receipts from F&T. Why he brought so many I have no idea. There is also several dozen of MB750 4 coil, MB 550's 4 coil and RBG 220 and 330

I think he had eyes of grandeur from some of the you tube videos and found out it was much more work than he anticipated. Guess I'll follow beartooth Trapr advise, and just make an offer, once I get a total count. Then add in the lures, beams, boards etc.

Thanks everyone for the advise.

Boy that last sentence sure changes my idea of a price. "There is also several dozen of MB750 4 coil, MB 550's 4 coil and RBG 220 and 330" These guys are expensive traps......jk

If they are usable traps I would offer half of new on the Dukes. The others really depends on condition. They should bring better money. It doesn't hurt as much
to pay up on them if you are going to use them. Careful if you are buying to resell.

What of what he has do you need?

if he has 300 duke #1 and you need 3 dozen , and won't use the others , you could sell them true. but you have to find that market.

if you were going to buy new right now what would you buy ? how much would that cost at MTP or F&T

make the list of your wants , compare with his list of haves

be honest with him if you don't need it all but your budget was X and the stuff you do need

I figure anything used even a few years is worth 1/2 of new

start there , he can say no

you can say no

no one should be offended by a 50% of new offer on used stuff , if they say 66% of new since it is not very used , then your in the same ball park 16% apart

The lures are all ways, no good for me to buy.

I did it once and got burnt, not saying everyone is dishonest.

But the one time is all it took.

Stretchers I go half price of new at best, they don't resale very good at all.

I usually feel lucky if I can get $5 for a big bundle of wooden or wire stretchers.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Not in this country. Used traps on auctions go for new price. No good deals here.
