I think Boco said they just let them burn - in the far north, anyway.

Last I saw on the news was that the USA has sent several hundred fire fighters up to help.

Big one still burning east of Cochrane, and another big one near Wawa.
And a bunch of smaller ones here and there in between.
Very little rain and weather getting hot again.

Maybe Boco will comment.

It was many years ago, but from Cochrane to Moosonee near James Bay was 206 miles.
at that time there only was a railroad, I think the Polar Bear Express ran 3 days a week, 65 miles per hour.

Yes, 206 miles I was there, no roads. I guess you wait for the rain to put out the fire in that area.
I got caught east of Wawa one year going home where they closed the road. The smoke was so bad you could see nothing.
Around 3 hours later it rained about 2 inches, they opened up the road and I went home. Fires are bad up there.

Biggest one in bc history still burning in the fort st John area. Fire local to me is out as far as I know. Fire by edson should be out because they have now declared a state of emergency due to flooding. Smoke has pretty much cleared up in north west alberta the 2" or so of rain sure helped along with a carbon tax hike. I'll bet it was the carbon tax because the bush is still pretty dry but my alphapha hay field is doing real well.

Not much has changed in this country.I worked and lived and trapped a good number of years all up and down the Moosonee line.
The track goes thru a corner of one of my traplines from Mile 51 to mile 60.Fought fires along the track many times. The worst fire I ever seen was in the sand country around Otter Rapids all big jackpine bush-the firefighters had to evacuate by chopper and leave a bunch of equipment to burn, bulldozers and payloaders. The wind changed direction, and the fire was so hot it was the only time I seen big jackpines exploding into splinters from the heat.
That fire was around 95 or so.

That trip was a really fun experience. I don't remember the 65 mph. Seemed much slower with a lot of stops. But if ya ever get the chance to do it I'd say go for it.

Sounds like you rode the little bear(the local that stops along the way)
At one time they ran the PB express for tourists only in the summer.
The little Bear runs all year.
