Anyone have one? I'm going to look at a used one tomorrow.

It's 10 years old but looks like it was kept well. It has 2550 miles on it.

Any thoughts?

My brother in-law has one a few years old now, he likes his.
Hasn't had any trouble with it, puts track's on it and it's a animal in the snow.

Let me sugar coat this

put a winch on it. you will find out how to get it stuck a few times

My plan was to buy a new Honda as I've always been a Honda fan. But I found out that once you add on all the "luxuries" like a roof and windshield, lol... and pay dealer fees and what not... a $10k base price model ends up costing $15K before you walk off the lot. And that's for their cheapest, 500cc model.

So then I was left debating whether it's a better deal to buy a 500cc bare bones model Honda for $15k, or a low mileage 1000cc Can Am with all the bells and whistles for $9k.

Still ain't sure but if everything looks good tomorrow I'm leaning that way.

you will wish you had the extra ponies if you buy the 500 cc machine. sooner or later you will want to power through some deep mud or swift water or even snow if you go on a western adventure.

Put over 4k miles on one (2014 1000XT). Overall, its been a good machine. Few things that could be better, such as the noise from the CVT transmission is fairly loud compared to other machines Ive operated. There is a known cooling issue that has to do with a plastic fitting that is used where the coolant hose hooks onto the water pump housing. I ended up putting an aftermarket aluminum replacement and it has resolved the issue. When you check/test it prior to buying, be sure to get it up to temp and watch the gauges to see if it regulates temp like it should. Leak around the filler neck of the gas tank that needed to be resealed...covered under warranty. It is easy on belts compared to other high horsepower machines. I changed the first belt at 3500 miles as a preventative measure...easier to change in your shop than on a trail.

I have a lot of miles on many different brands of utvs and orvs. Can Am typicallly holds up better and lasts longer than most. I know the Honda guys dont like to hear that, and I still own a Honda.

Other's experience may vary, but if that machine looks clean and you can verify it has been serviced properly, I wouldnt be afraid of it.

You said you put over 4000 miles on it. Then what? Do you still use it/sell it/ it died?

Watch the videos on Matt's Offroad Recovery and pay attention to all of the Can Ams he has to take out on a trailer.

We have a 2009 RZR, a 2016 CanAm Commander and a couple of newer rangers. The CanAm is BY FAR the worst of the lot. It is loud. It came with a radio - no way can you hear it. The hump between the two front seats gets burning hot - if a kid sits there, better have a pillow. And, the back bed is trying to fall off ours. We keep it on with ratchet straps. Service is more expensive than the polaris. 1700 miles. Kept under roof. No mudding or rough riding. Dont know if this one just a lemon - but it would keep me from buying another. My ranger has over twice as many miles and is in three times as good shape.

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you are looking for a working UTV take a look at a Kawasaki Mule, we have had one for about 5 years and it is used every day for hauling feed, moving waterers, and 100 other farm tasks. Its bed sits lower than the other machines, it is easy to get into and out of, and the bench seat allows entry from either side of the machine. We have had no mechanical issues with it at all.

Now if you are looking for a trail riding machine forget what I said as it is slow, top speed is about 20 mph and it rides to rough for trail riding, it is nothing more than a workhorse.

Pioneer is the way to go. Buy once, cry once. You will get years of use for the spend. Just put as much foil insulation under and behind the seat as you can. Tube doors would be a necessity in your neighborhood. Air flow from them helps pull the heat out. Heat is the only thing that keeps the Honda from being a great unit.

Can say that even in the, dead of winter can ride around without an enclosed cab and be comfortably warm from the engine heat, in the summer if you have the split windshield it'll be at least part way open to keep from cooking yourself and passanger
