Got my latest yard art piece done. A very big over 40" wide mule deer rack. It will fit in good with my elk rack I made a few years ago !! [Linked Image]

Nice work sir!
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Very cool! Great job! About 10 years ago, there was a guy down around Avon, MT that made a replica of an elk shed. He had it on the barway above his gate. It had to be 8-10 feet long and was one piece. He shaped the root ball like the base of a shed horn and the tips of the "antler" were whitened. The tree had a natural curve and this thing looked just like a giant shed. I suspect someone came along and gave him a bunch of money for it because it was replaced with a pair of Texas Longhorns made from two trees that looked outstanding as well. They disappeared after a couple of years as well. His gate sits back from the highway but I still have to check it out every time I go by to see if he has something else.

That's neat. How long did it take you to make it?

I worked on this "steel" mule deer rack off and on for the last year. I had the antlers done last fall but I just couldn't get in the mood for the skull... until this last week. Painting took a couple days. I am designing a euro rack of a BIGHORN sheep in my head... which I always do before I start making anything. I see what I want over and over in my mind... then when I start welding it's pretty much just going thru the motion. For the bighorn rack I think I am going to use a couple sections of right and left hand auger flighting. I got a couple other projects in the "gathering scrape steel" mode. I just like to weld !!
