Spent part of the day putting a new front hub assembly in my truck. Actually went pretty well for doing it as a shade tree on driveway deal. But of course I always have to bleed on most of the jobs I do. This time I didn't bleed but danged if didn't smack my thumb right at the start and pinch the web. It Wasn't bad enough felt the need to drill or burn hole in it. But it still got my attention has little bite to it makes guy say colorful things. I scrubbed off all black goo had on my hands before took pictures. I know I should wear gloves of some kind but they kinda drive me nuts.

ford or chevy

the ford ones I found an easy cheap way to get them out with out a puller

if did more than one here and there a hub grappler would pay for it's self but they are not cheap upfront.

grade 8 bolts , a stack of washers and a nut

drive out the wheel stud put in about a 4 inch grade 8 bolt with a stack of washers between the nut and the back of the hole for the stud then hold the nut with a wrench and hit it with the impact. do that in 2-3 stud holes and pops them right out with no beating

the bolt ends up stuck with the hub but bulk hardware cost it is not much more than the can of brake clean.

it also helps if you take the wheel and rotor off and hose down the hub assembly about 3-4 days before you want to work on it with penetrating oil.

My truck is a 06 Dodge Dakota 4x4. When I did the driver's side couple years back I broke one of the bolts that hold the hub. Actually thought great easy out just get new one. Well turned out was dealer part had to order and cost me $30 for that one bolt. So this time I've been spray Creep or Fluid Film whichever can I grab every few days. Funny part is actually quieted the bearing some. Ordered the parts from Rock Auto weeks ago just been waiting on weather. Needed the motivation so today was the day.
Anyways I pulled brake caliper and rotor, popped both the ball joints tie rod end. Ran the axle nut off and pulled the whole hub and frame. Took LP weed burner heated the frame braced it good. Two shots with maul bearing popped right out hub was off.
I ran the hand grinder with wire brush on everything needed. Bolted the new hub in hooked everything back up. It really helped that this is the 4th one I've done. Didn't have to replace ball joints just one sway link. Also helped that had my son's 1/2 Milwaukee impact.
First time did one these on my son's truck. We didnt get enough heat on the old hub. I think I beat on that thing for an hour. Finally got a second one of the little propane torch. Got enough heat pop it. That's why I went right to the LP weed burner. I think whole thing took about 4-5 hours trust me I'm not fast hobbling around. Takes me to long just find right size sockets, lol But gotter done took for test run. Much much quieter ride. No bleeding just the mashed thumb nail.

Mine is almost healed after about 3 months. Shut it in a car door. Just a small piece of the old nail left.

Wow yours looks more painful than mine. I'm a little messed up don't feel pain like I should. So It did throb just a bit before bed last night. But I don't think im going to need to drill it. First time I ever had some one put a hole in my nail I think I was 18?? Doctor heated a paper clip red hot in little alcohol Bunsen burner. Burnt hole threw my nail really made me jump but instantly felt better. He actually missed the sweet spot first time hurt so bad I almost heaved. Since that time I have burnt or drilled my own to many times. The little drills for cleaning torch tips have worked. Have done the hot wire hot paper clip even hot needle. Spinning the smallest drill in the index with my finger has worked. LoL. Even did one once with tip on my pocket knife when it was best I had handy. I don't usually pay a doctor for something I can glue or sew myself.

Once the bolts are out of the hub use the power steering to push the assembly apart.

I wish I would see this back when did the first one I would have tried it. Everyone told me had to be pressed or pounded out and I didn't have a press. I did replace a ball joint and CV shaft on the other ones. But if I could try this not have to pull the whole arm. Save a bunch of extra wrenching.. Hopefully I won't have to do any again soon.
