I have always heard that in Canada you can’t own any land. The crown owns it. Is that correct?

maybe this is true?
The land of Canada is solely owned by Queen Elizabeth II who is also the head of state. Only 9.7% of the total land is privately owned while the rest is Crown Land. The land is administered on behalf of the Crown by various agencies or departments of the government of Canada. The Canadian Act has no provision for any Canadian to own physical land in Canada. Canadians can only own an interest in an estate. Of the land owned by the Queen, 50% is administered by the provincial governments and the rest by the federal government. The Crown Land administered by the federal and provincial governments can be defined as land not assigned in freehold tenure. The land in Canada is mainly used as national parks, forests, private homes, and agriculture.

Quebec tried to separate. When they found out that they could only take a small strip along the St. lawrence river, because the rest was Indian land and the Indians told the frenchmen that they were staying in Canada. That sort of put the kibosh on those ejits. Same is true in Alberta or any other Province.

So when a piece of land with a fancy cabin is purchased for over a million dollars the purchaser just owns the cabin and what leases the land. Do you pay for the lease as well as taxes?

There is both private and public land in Canada.Same as in the USA. Way more public land in Canada than Private. Anyone can use public land for recreational purposes. Buisness development on public land needs permits.

No, I own a cabin in Canada and have deed to land and cabin, although it’s far from a “million dollar fancy cabin” lol. Our cabin is however, surrounded by government land, “Crown Ground”. It’s basically public ground you can cruse over, need a land use permit if you plan to camp on it long term, otherwise your free to travel, hunt, fish on Crown Ground unless posted otherwise.

Looks like a separation of States and Provinces in our future the way it’s going and that’s the best case scenario.
