i'm thinking about going to spear up some creek chubs for next season raccoon bait. could just trap or catch em with a hook and line, but where is the fun in that. anybody tried chubs?

I have used them a lot, great bait. Good for catfish too, fresh chunked, or live for big bass.

I truly enjoy cane pole fishing for chubs to use as bait.

Our creeks here used to be jam packed with them…. Sadly, since tiling has become so prevalent, our creeks that once held untold numbers, are now nearly devoid of them and shiners. Was a time you could stop at any bridge and catch a couple dozen in under 5 minutes. Now I walk remote sections for hours to catch a 1/2 dozen. Shiners here would make a spawning run usually in mid- late may, they would run the smaller feeder creeks and would be solid fish. One scoop with a net and you could have hundreds of them. Each spring we would take one scoop and put in a neighbors pond for the crappies and bluegills to play with. I haven’t seen anything like those days in nearly 25 years now. Kinda sucks.

When I was young I went down to a small river here and caught chubs and big shiners for the use of coon bait. Always had good luck with them.
