Opened recently only a few miles from me. I never really shot on a range like this before. Can shoot to 1000 yards. They have competitions on Saturdays. I have to attend a safety briefing Saturday morning before I can use it. Told me to bring a rifle and at least 20 rounds. Said can shoot during daylight hours anytime there is no competitions. Can bring a guest so I can take kids grandkids etc with me. I am looking forward to it. Usually just shoot in a pasture so mud is an issue. I am not sure yet how your suppose to get out to targets. I usually drive between shots. If I have to walk I guess I better invest in a spotting scope. Maybe I can use the 4wheeler

So whats a good spotting scope that won't beak the bank? how much more clarity do you get from a 200 dollar compared to say 900?

Bet bass pro will let you compare them at the store Danny.Won't be the same as on the range but think give you the answer you are looking for.

I am thinking if I can see bullet holes clearly with a 200 dollar scope wont be any need for a pricey one. They all claim about the same magnification

Most ranges have a limited time allotment for going down range, ie: changing targets etc. I joined a benchrest club for the facilities, and it was a real PITA to wait for the once an hour break while some guy was fire forming brass. They only wanted new members for the dues money, and were very antagonistic to others.

For us guys ovah 65 ...our club dues are 45.00 per year. Plus you have to do 12 hours of club clean up..and other club held events per year.
And we are capped at 200 membahs.
No crowed shooting areas....150 yaahds is the furthest taahget.
Archery area...and other archery clubs do a 3D shoot at our place ...200 acres
15 covered positions with bench rest benches..on the rifle range
Out door covered pistol range ....can hold 4 shooters
Skeet area
Stocked trout pond for the kids fishing Derby
Nice club house
Every time I go....iam the only one there..or maybe 1or 2 other shooters at most.
It’s perfect for me

I am not sure yet how your suppose to get out to targets. I usually drive between shots. If I have to walk I guess I better invest in a spotting scope. Maybe I can use the 4wheeler Yeah, you ought to drive,,,something. It will keep your heart rate down for better aiming. My range, guys bring in a 4 wheeler during matches just to change targets. I generally just drive my truck, it's graveled. If you want to see bullet holes on the target at 300+ you're going to spend some money. Those 150 dollar Barska jobs they sell on Midway wont cut it. 500 dollars on up and the sky's the limit for a decent spotting scope. Get into the range and see what the other guys are using. A cheap way out (for a while) is to buy those Birchwood Casey Shoot and C targets. That will blow off enough that you can see your bullet holes at 300 from the bench with binoculars or a large power scope. Don't sweat the safety course. It's all common sense stuff I'm sure you already know and it kind of levels the playing field.

I am thinking if I can see bullet holes clearly with a 200 dollar scope wont be any need for a pricey one. They all claim about the same magnification I have been the High Power match director at our club for over twenty years. I can tell you that the bigger objective is better than bigger magnification. High magnification and mirage can make it where you can't tell anything. I have seen countless scopes bought that were a waste of money, a $200 scope won't hack it unless the angle of the sun is just right, and that changes throughout the day. You'll be lucky to see any at 200 yards and forget anything farther. In the years of my competitive shooting career i have bought 3 scopes and just wasted the money on 2 of them. I got advise to save my money and buy once but like a lot of guys I didn't listen. my scope would have cost me half if I had the money I wasted on the first 2. Think of Leapers/ Tasco vs. Leupold or other higher end rifle scopes, works the same for spotting scopes. I ended up with a Kowa 821 which is 24 power with an 80mm objective. If you want to see how good a scope is look through it on a cloudy day, a bright sunshine day isn't a good test and a cheap scope on a cloudy day is guaranteed to be a frustrating one. I learned the hard way.

I am a member at 2 ranges but letting my membership at the one go in 3 days when it expires that one is $180 and you can work for 10 hours to reduce it to $80. thing is while I have been a member for 8 years I have only worked it for 2 years and not shot there once in the last 2 years they open membership and have about 700 members and I can rejoin at any point for 180 so not much point in paying fro what I am not using.
I took a board position at the other range I belong to and it has consumed all my time max 100 members closed membership it is all outdoors but nice for the cost. that range is $100 a year it was $65 now it is $65 for 65 and older and 100 for normal membership and 65 after you attend a work day. I am there for every work day with my position.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
