Lotsa dogs running loose around here in NW Arkansas. Ran into 3 rottweilers down along the river the other day. They turned and ran off.

When my daughters were young we had a bunch of rabbits. Ate them as well as the girls showing them for 4H. Neighbor had a couple dogs that got loose and were trying to get in the hutch's. Biting at their feet through the hail screen floor. Had one ripped pretty good and the rabbit was in her nesting box. I grabbed a ball bat. (to many neighbors I was nervous about firing a gun) those dogs tried working me like hounds bay up a bear. Circling with one staying behind me. I swung and broke ones leg. It went to ki yiing and scrambling away. I missed a swing at the other and they both headed home. Neighbor shot the one with a broke leg and bought me a new roll of hail screen. Even pets can go bad. These were big mixed breed dogs. The other dog never got loose again but would hide in its dog box when it saw me.

I’m thinking if I had that kind of time, it or they would be shot, hopefully multiple times.

Loose dog approaches me and my hand is on my 9, ready to draw. Ready to draw? Mines out ready to shoot. Seen my son execute the perfect shot on a charging animal. He already had his gun out, dropped to one knee as he was aiming, and squeezed off the round just below the neck. The animal slid within feet of him with him still on one knee and gun still on the animal. He was fine until he went to stand up, that’s when the adrenaline hit, lol.

Was chatting with a rancher in the sticks years ago, any by far was the most dangerous critters for the ranch and people were the feral dogs turned loose. Unless your will or are a breeder spay or neuter pets.
My kiddo was attacked on CO at a park playground cuz the owner of a spaniel puppy was to busy on his phone to leash his dog. Luck it was just scratches. He's still scared of dogs.
It can happen anyshere you least expect it.

About 5 years ago my wife and I lived in our House in Charleston. I had a Pit Bull attack my wife and I shot it. My wife went to the Hospital via Ambulance and had her hand and arm messed up. While I was waiting in the waiting room Imhad a Officer tell me that he would be filing Charges against me for firing a gun in City limits. I laughed and called him what he was and called my attorney in front of him DEMANDING to SUE this Police Department as well as the owner of the Dog. Especially since it was the THIRD attack by this particular Pit Bull. When my lawyer delivered the papers to the Police Department an investigator came out and talked to all three Victims. Then he had the Animal Control Officer come out while he was still there to take the Pit Bull to have it put Down, The Owner even tried to deny he had a dog but you could hear it barking in his house. The Officer was given a write up and tried to apologize to me but I told him he needed to apologize to my wife not me!! He was one of the Officers that kept sweeping it under the rug every time someone was attacked!!! The owner was upset that we had his dog put down but not upset that it was going around the neighborhood attacking people. There are about a dozen kids under 14 running around that neighborhood and one of the victims was just 9 years old. The owner should be put down as well!!! He is an unemployed BUM and has nothing to sue for and he knows it!!! We have dogs but we are RESPONSIBLE with them.
God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

Read that story yesterday then had a scary experience yesterday afternoon. I was headed to a distributer to pick up some parts and pulled over on the interstate to check the water in my truck. I pop the hood and am taking off the cap and I hear a dog bark. I look in the ditch and there are two stay rock females standing there barking at me. They didn't approach or growl so I don't think they really meant me any harm but it sure got my attention after reading that story.

i was trapping In SC. Checking traps I came up on a collard dog In one of my sets. The collard dog rule was In effect. Stopped about 20 yards from the set and got out and got my catch pole. I was just about to the set when 4 dogs came out of the ditch. They were on a dead run and I was the target. I have this habit of leaving my driver side door open when I'm setting or checking traps. It's a good thing that I did because I never would have made It if It would have been closed. Those 4 dogs where on the truck like cugo (sp). to make a long story short 3 dogs ended up In the ditch.

And I bet the lady didn't have homeowners insurance owning dangerous dogs like pit bulls. Or, if she does have insurance she probably never told the insurance company about the dogs. I hope the guy sues her either way.

I’m sure glad I don’t live where loose dogs are a problem when I’m out in the hills.

Almost all insurance companies ask the question in their application if you own a dog? If so, what kind? There is a list unacceptable dogs such as pit bulls. If you own one of these dogs, they will reject your application. If you lie and don't tell them you don't own a dangerous dog and the dog bites someone, they will usually deny the liability claim.

especially if your not in the city you can always re-holster when if they turn out to be no issue
really even in the city , having it out isn't the end of the world , if the owner does happen to be running out the door to call the dog off , they know that you mean business , but I am guilty of the hand on and not drawing myself. remember re-holster carefully look , go slow , avoid an ND while the adrenalin is going.
for all the decades people have been talking about the Tueller drill the real take away is 21 feet/7 yards is about the minimum where you want to start shooting not start drawing if the threat is real.
the sad thing is we are all wanting to avoid the shooting as much as possible because we are afraid of the mess of police and angry people who don't understand the reality of the threat. so we will try and resolve it without first in most cases
I can't blame you I have let a lot get much closer so far not had any any bad issues or bites. I have considered a Necker knife so that either hand can get to it in the event of being pinned down or grabbed just never got around to it. there is a limit to how much you can carry every day every where.
for safest thing to shoot with neighbors not far away if say dogs are say in your chicken coop if shooting isn't prohibited like in a city unless it is specifically to end a threat to your safety. dogs are low to the ground, you should be shooting down angle , this might be the one time #4 bird shot is appropriate it will be close and the pellets have probably the least danger to ricochet or at least doing any damage if they do.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
