Who's had problem with the 17 HMR. Mine hits the shell but it does not fire. Had a new firing pin and spring installed and it still does not fire. The repair shop say throw it away. Seems even Savage does not have a fix. This bolt action has had about 250 shells run threw it. The shells have the hit marks on them but just maybe not hard enough. Any suggestions?

Need to determine if it,s the gun or ammo. Rim thickness may be an issue.

I was going to say the same thing. If it is not hitting hard enough it's either a headspace issue or a short firing pin or there is crud in the bolthead and the firing pin isn't coming all the way out. I would definitely check the ammo first.

We tried to run different ammo. The CCI were the best. Mostly whatever Fleet Farm sells. We did Federal and winchester. New firing pin from a place in Sd called first something.

take your bolt apart clean it with nothing but a dry lube like Horandy one shot or wd-40 specialist dry lube , clean the chamber with a brass brush
and dry lube
put it back together and try

if it doesn't fire eject the case turn 90 degrees insert in chamber and try again

if it puts a good hit on the rim you should be able to see it

do you or has anyone dry fired this gun
while dry fire is safe with a few 22s it is not good for savages

it obviously worked at some point for you to get 250 rounds through it what changed from when it was working.
or was it always hit and miss?

I don't have the 17hmr savage but it uses the same action as the 22 and I have one of those.
I haven't had issues with firing but it does get carboned up a lot and have function issues and it is easy to over lube a 22 or 17 and have the oil dry out and get sticky that might be enough to slow down the firing pin enough to make it not fire
a burr on the breach face would be something to look for also is there a mark on the barrel where the firing pin hits the barrel? it is strait vertical on the top of the bolt

Oh you can see the hit marks, the repair shop thinks its the ammo so I bought remington ammo and it still happens. Yes the gun did fire and then started to miss fire. We shoot pr dogs in Sd, so you can shoot a 100 times in a day. Big river outdoors cleaned it two times and then put in a new firing pin and spring and still miss fires. Now my buddy told me the other day his target 17 HMR now does not want to eject the spent shell recently. He has had it about a year and run around 100 shells thru it. I did see someone had sent in his savage to savage and they did not fix it. I do agree that just maybe the firing pin has slowed up just a little as some gunk might be causing it to happen. Thank you

I'd send it to the company. I'm sure they want you to be happy with their product. The savage .17 hmr I have is the semi-auto A17 and it works flawlessly.

Mine shoots good. This is the only problem I’ve had. Was cleaning it up yesterday an noticed lint kept getting caught there. That’s the only reason I noticed the crack. Savage is sending me a new stock. Good customer service.

My 93R17 fires fine and is a great shooting gun. But it will have a spent shell fail to eject occasionally, especially if it has set with the round in the chamber for a long time before it is shot. If the spent hangs, I will clean the chamber after clearing.

Seems like i'm hearing more and more about carbon buildup in barrel throats which doesn't clean up with normal couple swipes with solvent rag even if the bore looks shiny GCP covers it pretty well

I was thinking it was the bolt too.
If that doesn't fix it let savage know the bolt is malfunctioning hopefully they'll replace it.

I remember when guns and traps worked well right out of the box. Seems like the quality of nearly everything has gone downhill.

I have a pre accu trigger savage 17hmr. Super precise. Never had a misfire in many years. Send it back to Savage. They’ll fix it. Just call them.

I purchased the A17 last year. Nice shooter and light weight.

I have an A17 also. Shot everything from gophers and squirrels to coyotes with it. It's a bolt, and it's been pretty reliable. Getting the CCI ammo that's optimized for the Savage A17 is getting to be a problem. Anyone seen any lately?
