I am not a wood expert but I have worked with enough yellow poplar (tulip poplar) to know that isn't it. Not anything like poplar. Looks like maple to me also. Actually, it looks like $.

Looks like burley maple

Save the land, resist against developers!!!
We don't need more houses.
I've lost too much trapping land to new housing developments.

Its not normal for tulip, but in rare cases it can look like that. Not saying it is, just that it could be. Everyone will say it looks like figured hard maple, and it does. But without actually holding and inspecting snd working it, none of us can be 100% certain. If you have worked with tulip much, you should be able to tell when you are working with it. Maple and tulip have very different “feel”s and grain structure. Also tulip is a good bit less dense.

I have a rainbowed yellow poplar and the wood looks nothing like what you show here.
Some say it was lighting struck, some say grew in mineral rich soil.
I'm like Arrow, no clue what you have there.

Nope not Tuliptree, the correct name for what we call Tulip Poplar. Though it is not a poplar, not even closely related. Liriodendron tulipfera is more closely related to the magnolias than it is to Populus.

Agreed that looks like figured (burl, blanket, tiger) hard maple but without sample in hard it could be a look alike.

I've never seen tulip poplar with any sort of strong figure. Color, yes, rainbow is a thing and most has some variation heartwood to sapwood.

I'm not as familiar with populus as we only have the cottonwood, P. deltoides, here and it is very uncommon but I could see it having some sort of figure by the way it grows. But that's just speculation on my part.

I've seen big tooth Aspen that has had similar figuring, but it is usually whiter. Generally comes out of a butt cut that has a lot of flare in it. Without seeing it in person can't say for sure.

It could be Sycamore. It has that same look, but you should be able to tell from the feel.

Whatever that is, it's worth big bucks. I would love a few hundred board feet. A nice coffee table or other furniture made out of that would bring thousands.

There's also a tree called Yellowwood or Yellow Locust. Not sure that's it though
