A few years ago at our family get together we had a “friendly” shoot off. I believe we used 22s simply because everyone had one in their vehicle. Things escalated from that point very quickly and the pursuit for the most accurate long rifles began. You would be truly amazed at the variance in cartridges in rimfire ammo if you start comparing weights from one bullet to the next, or measuring the rim thickness between them. It’s a very time consuming process but a lot of guys sort their ammo based on these factors.

It has been one of the more expensive hobbies I’ve ever dove into but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We ended up starting a good family group text and have done a better job staying in touch with everyone since the start of our family shoot even.




As much fun as I have had reminding everyone I took the trophy home last year my new goal is to get my young daughter to place ahead of some of her cousins, uncles, and grandfathers this year! I’ve probably hijacked this thread enough, this stuff gets me going though!

see if you can get her to an Appleseed clinic , well worth what they charge for kids , they get to hear the good word from other people and they get lots of drills to improve their shooting.
it is 3 position. prone , kneeling/seated and standing. so it gets them trained on more than just a bench.

The best .22 ammo? What shoots best out of your gun, is a common saying... In gunsmithing school, we used these for accuracy testing:

CCI Standard Velocity (nearly as good as match stuff, but not quite. Good enough for accuracy testing for off the rack guns out to 50-60 yards for hunting. If the rifle and shooter is up to it, will hold sub 1 MOA out to 50-60 yards.

We used different bullet types as well to insure no feeding issues.

Didn't see much difference between the two SK's. Eley is good stuff if you want to pay for it, but SK will do the same, cheaper.

I really like CCI subsonic 45 gr hollow points. Use them for nutria control work.

I’m cheap, 500ct of Thunderbolt’s. Dropped every critter I’ve shot with them. Hogs included. And one very sick deer. All shots under 50yds.

CCI mini mags are as good as anything for me. I don't shoot paper though after the gun is sighted in.

What your gun likes, and that doesn't always suit what you like.

CCI quiets subsonic. Last several years my only .22 shots were under 5 feet and “quiet.”

Eley match grade when you can find them I'm on my last box of 50.

Wolf Match Extra shoot the most accurate out of both my Anschutz and CZ.
