What is the oddest thing you have SUCCESSFULLY used as bait. Just saw a video of a guy using Vicks Vapor Rub for beaver. Never heard of that before.

Why do I carry 10mm? Because shooting twice is just silly.

I was a smoker maybe the first 25 years that I trapped. I used to cross paths with an old mink trapper, a real big numbers guy he was a smoker also. I asked him if he thought the cigarette smell effected the mink working sets ? He told me that some one had told that the cigarette smoke would spook the mink . He called bs on that and he started sticking the buts in the top of his pockets just to prove a point. He swore his carh rate went up. After that I started doing the same until I left IA several years later, It seemed that he was wright.

The guy who taught me to trap fox used pork cracklins and fox urine in his dirt holes. He caught a pile of fox and that’s all I ever knew him to use

used a beer can with a cigarette butt on top for a backing at a flat set and caught a fox. this was in a gravel pit "party area".

in coon boxes i have used greasy mcdonalds bags from the back seat, and a discarded tampon found on the road side at an abandoned farm. both caught coon.

also a dirty baby diaper from the road ditch that caught several coon.

really sucks when you run out of bait while on the line. i still prefer a nice sized chunk of salted fish.

Don't think I've ever been hard up enough for bait to resort to used tampons and diapers!
I used some Sonny's catfish bait in some DPs one time when it was all I could find in the truck. It's a better catfish bait than it is a coon bait.

Used licorice for bait trapping some problem coon in town. Didn't seem to attract any skunk. Didn't want that smell in the residential area.

Good old Frenchs mustard at a flat set will catch Grey's. So will presweetened grape cool aid powder.

Some afterbirth from a sow down a dirthole. First night catch. Only tried it once, sold all the sows.

Cracklines are hot on Canines. Had an old guy from Glenville that told me that cracklings were like Crack to Canines. He used to hang at conventions with Hal Sullivan

I usually use Chicken Livers or Cracklings for canines. I can tell you that a Gallon of Fox Urine and a box of different lures as well as Castor are NOT acceptable X-Mas gifts at my wifes Family at Christmas. Talk about emptying a Room just open them and try to pass an opened Bottle of a call, lure around in a city slicker Household. My side of the family accepted them hers did not!!!

When I was starting out as a 14 year old kid with no money I made my own bait. 1 carp chopped in half, 1 rabbit chopped in half, three or four duck eggs from the coop smashed, a gopher, and a bullsnake chopped into pieces. Sealed it all up in a bucket and let it rot on top of the shed roof aaaallll summer. When I opened it up it was just a pale green soup with some bits of hair, scales and bones, and it’d make your eyes water just being near the bucket. A friend of mine was about 15 feet downwind when I opened it once, he lost his lunch on the spot! But I caught 12 coyotes and 5 kit fox on it. Heck I might make it again this coming summer lol.

All I can think is I hope that wolf tangled up in the opposite direction from the “bait” lol
