Flat set nearby (20 feet on approach path), small hole under rock, grass tuft etc with perfect blending, a tiny bit of curiosity lure and fresh bladder urine
Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure

Multiflora rose thorns laid in the area he was digging will make him work it from elsewhere. Pop did it often and so have I

For fox, block that trap in hard. Give it one clean spot to step, right on the pan. Works great for me, the get in my exposed cat sets and make a mess all the time. Both reds and greys, they don’t seem to give any bothers about blocking or huge backings.

Had a digger messing with one of my sets a few years ago. Was a step-down set along the edge of a hedge row. Remade the set as usual then added a second trap behind and blended it in with grass. Had a large male coyote quietly waiting for me the next day in both traps, one front foot and one rear. Looked as if he got caught by the front foot with the rear trap first. Never had anymore digging afterwards.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Only time I ever had it happen to me so far is with a coyote. Dug up 2 nights in a row from the back. Like 3togo said, I remade the set after the second time with a second trap behind and offset completely blended in. Had him in 2 nights, rear foot in the original trap, foot front in the back trap. Most vocal one I've ever caught, lol, he was NOT happy!
