This winter weather has finally broke me. I have started a five year plan to move somewhere a bit warmer. I'm currently looking at New Mexico pretty hard mostly the east side of the state. We've also been looking at Arkansas somewhere near the Ozarks. I'm looking for pros and cons from people that live there or know the states.

Keep in mind you can no longer trap on public land in New Mexico. This state is starting to go the way of Liberal Colorado

Arkansas. If not mistaken, I believe there are a boat load of trapping restrictions in NM.

I live in the North of the state, we have winter which helps keep the bugs away both kinds. the fur is usually saleable---especially cats---lots of deer and elk--Oryx in the south--pretty open and ranchers are usually friendly---we will be trying to get our lion trapping back on private land---we are fighting to get our public land back---The politics stink ------Dems are 75% of the legislature---gun laws are pretty good---the county I live in is corrupt the last two sheriffs are in prison !

I think the Ozarks are feeling up with left coasters now.

Lot of good country in between those 2 states by my standards. I like remote and the country along the Cimarron and Canadian rivers looks pretty neat to me. With all the trees and people Arkansas is a little closed in by my standards

What's wrong with cold and snow? Way better than heat and humidity. Maybe just move to Iowa where you have both. cry

Your selection might depend on what u like to trap and hunt. Arkansas if u like to trap coons and water animals and fish. Arkansas if you don't want to be too remote. West if you like coyotes and cats and like hunting deer and elk. Less people and water as you head west.

The last couple of days I've been thinking of moving to get away from the cold as well. I live in Arkansas!

Extreme temp and weather swings. All 4 seasons in 1 day. Depending where you you're looking here less
Lows can be in the negative, High's can average 100+ with little humidity. The politics are horrible.

Big game is draw tags only except bear turkey lion and a few others and private land. No public land trapping. Beautiful state lots of deep rooted culture. Lots of unique opportunities great food

Its -10f here right now. 20mph winds and knee deep snow. How bad could it possibly be there? And I put 4 wheel borrows full of wood in my boiler today just to stay warm.

A VVA member I know moved to NM about 7-8 years ago. They are at 7K feet above sea level so that took some adjustment as well as hydration but they like it now that they have settled in.
One advantage for AR would be waterfowl hunting if you are into that, long seasons and liberal bag limits with lots of area to hunt. As stated some good fishing as well. As to trapping there are cats and canines in both states but AR would have a lot more water species and coon. I know several couples that bought in the Ozark area 30 years ago and have gone down for winters since retiring. They say it is a lot more crowded then a decade ago and there is more rough weather in the spring and summer, but they are back in WI then.

LOL, The last 3 or 4 Illinois GOVENORS, D's all of them went to prison! I was stationed at Little Rock for 2 1/2 yrs, we were issued arctic parkas, it got pretty cold, maybe not Minnisnowta cold, but cold enough. I live in Mo, and hunt the Ozarks, my cabin is about 40 miles south of Ft Wood, and I'm gad to have heavy winter gear, and take all of it for deer season.

I have learned so much more from a few comments than I have from a week of Google. I really like the hunting and bag limits of Arkansas. I'm just not sure I want to live there.
