I was just watching a video over on AR15.com. One of the mods can give me the greenlight if they want it posted here.

A kid is attacked by another kid at school. There are obvious circumstances leading to the attack. It was hard to watch and could have been prevented. It was a brutal attack.

Young dads--start your boys in wrestling early. My boys wrestle and my girls competed in Judo for years. Make boys and girls stick with it through high school and actually compete. Put them in boxing or kick boxing for at least a year. I recommend wrestling and Judo much more than Jiu-jitsu, karate or taekwondo but anything is better than nothing. Hiding them from the world will, in my opinion, delay the inevitable and just make it worse.

It's not like the old days. A lot more threats exist and kids now generally have a softer existence. Talk to them about the world. They need the confidence and skills to defend themselves. Confidence also leads to a kid not out looking for trouble.

I sent the video to all 4 of my kids this morning with a good old fashioned Dad lecture about the world. Broken record as they've heard it many times before....but this one got me wound up.

I agree with the training. I took karate and judo. One result was never wanting to fight, and knowing that it’s best to walk away. However, I might kind of feel sorry for the person that goes way over that line. Their recovery may take a while.

Not sure about the "boys" wrestling as I have all my kids wrestling. wink Oldest daughter was a state champion last year at high school level and is now wrestling in college. Middle one, another daughter is coming on strong in high school and may actually be a better wrestler than her big sister. Finally my youngest, the boy has been wrestling in kids wrestling for a couple of years now. Oldest is talking MMA this summer to stay in shape and I love the idea. I am a firm believer that the kids need to learn skills to defend themselves in this crazy world we live in as well as a strong sense of awareness of their surroundings. Way to many young ones walk around defenseless with there attention on a phone or the ground beneath their feet, completely unaware of their surroundings. SMH

Agree. I see it with my oldest son who is 15. He's not the biggest kid but he's competed in wrestling and Judo since he was 5. Kick boxed for a year or so and then got too busy with high school wrestling. I admire his calm confidence and conflict resolution (at least what I am aware of).

I should be able to take him at least for another 6 months. Maybe 8 months.

Here is the video that started my thread. I have no idea where it happened.

Mods, take it down if inappropriate.

Id take a skilled jiu jitsu guy over skilled wrestler any day. Wrestler may take the jiu jitsu guy down, but will panic on their back. The jiu jitsu guy will end it from his back and is comfortable there. Or on top. Or the side. And can do it all with less strength and power. Pure technique.

After watching the video I am left wandering why not a single person jumped up to help the young fella, yet someone had the thought of filming the event. SMH Nothing but sheep in that room with exception of the person that finally arrived to grab the chair.

Any type of self-defense is better than nothing. I feel all children need to have some working knowledge of self-defense. Though, there are styles that are really better than others, depending on what they focus on.

I took Shotokan for over 25 years . It has been the best decision of my life , besides two FBI certified Firearms instructors later in life, adding to that.

Shotokan is powerful and effective. Also from Okinawa, Shorin Ryu , is direct, no nonsense defense , smoother, more fluid than the others.

I had vital need of it twice in life, a third time, not life-threatening, but still needed .

Sometimes things happen so fast, there is no time to employ a pistol.

It is not a lover of violence, to know self-defense, but wise, with the mental training of being a peace seeking individual . One who is self-aware in all circumstances, and has the wisdom to see ahead to avoid situations of danger.

If they take some classes , by a good instructor, if they find they love what they're learning, they can easily continue in progress . The more they practice, just like shooting, the better muscle memory they will have. They will not hesitate or wonder what to do if confrontation suddenly happens to them.

My 25 plus years has served me well, even in just being in decent physical and emotional state .

Fear paralyzes. Controlled anger is power and motivates. I say controlled, because that is what will motivate one to not accept anyone invading their bubble of comfort space zone to touch them, or get in their face, resulting in escalating battery.

Good on anyone , IMO, who cares to introduce their loved ones to the self-defense style that they feel good with. Age has no bearing. Young or older in life, it is all good. Healthy exercise in balance, circulation, and smoothness of body/hand/eye coordination.

My 7 year old grandaughter is in Ju-Jitsu and is a natural. Her only problem is she thinks shes hurting her opponent and gets up off them and walks away before the match is over LOL Her nickname is Non and I call her Ana-Non- Da. I will try to get my daughter to post videos later this week when I see her.

No doubt wrestling is a good asset to have but once you start rolling and sparring with someone the advantage of BJJ is unbelievable. All fighting styles have their place. Stand a wrestler toe to toe with a striker, he’s done if he can’t get the guy to the ground. Get a wrestler rolling around with a bjj guy and it can get ugly. Just like anything balance goes a long ways.

My kids take Brazilian jujitsu and kickboxing which is about as close to street fighting your going to get. Krav maga is another one to consider.

I found that odd too. Made me wonder if maybe the kid was autistic or something?

My son started Kenpo Karate young, The school he was in was very fight oriented. Big difference between tournament "fighting" and get it done fighting. He advanced high in the training and no kids in school would challenge him after one very short "incident" ...The discipline is great for kids and knowing what it feels like to be hit and not panic is huge.

I never thought of that. Ol Mario kind of blindsided him- but Ive seen pinadas defend themselves better. He gave that fight to him on a silver platter. No covering up, no curling up, no nothing.

If the kid knew how to fight, the aggressor probably wouldn't have messed with him. Also, if the kid knew how to fight, we wouldn't have just sat there. He would have popped up and been ready to defend himself.

And, not to turn this into a which martial art is better, but a decent middle school wrestler will smoke a decent middle school BJJ kid 9.8 times out of 10. This is my opinion only having watched thousands of wrestling matches, hundreds of BJJ and hundreds of Judo matches. Royce Gracie is a different story, but even the UFC is loaded with World Champions who were Division I wrestlers. Plus wrestling is less expensive.

All of them are better than nothing. Make them actually compete and not just practice.

Its pretty blatant that he doesnt know how to fight, or didnt want to. Its not a special skill set to try covering up after getting pummeled 12 times. Im trying to wrap my mind around why he didnt ? Maybe hes Butterbeans son and can take a hit or 25.
