Reaching out to some of you all that build houses, barns and what not. I'm not looking for a tiny house on a trailer thing. But, what style would be the cheapest to build with a livingroom, kitchen, bathroom, one bedroom? I'm thinking no basement and having 600 to 800 total square feet on one floor. No frills, bare bones kinda house. My Mama lived in some houses like in the pic in the coal camps. Would this be the cheapest way to go? Thanks.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

[/quote] Hi Catch. That house is what is referred to in the South as a shotgun shack. Hang a window air-conditioner out of the front room window and a satellite dish on the roof and you're good to go. They can be neat little houses for 2 people.

Thanks Osagian, yes Shotgun shack. I've been around them all my life. My best buddy in School lived in one. I'm wondering if they would be the cheapest way to go if a fella had land, well, and septic. I'm not up on materials cost and looking for living quarters on the cheap.

Used trailer houses can be very affordable. I'm under 80k into a double wide on concrete, gravel driveway, septic and well and that includes the 8k to run power in.
Edit, I'm actually just a touch under 70k into all that.

Just build to local code so you can sell it someday If you don't plan on spending the rest of your life there you might want to keep this in mind.

It will be built to code and needed to last 30 years. If I ain't dead by then, I missed a good chance to be.

Square gives the most interior space for the material required. Well actually cylindrical does, but nobody builds a round house. I have seen several grain bins made into homes. There is a 6 or 8 sided place right up the road from us as well. If do a grain bin spray on insulation to deaden the sound as it echos if not.

Holy Cow, 8K to get power there. How far to run the power?
I’m being told by Duke Energy that it will cost me 7-10k to run power 700’ for my service here in NC.

My camp is the last one with electric service. There is a camp about a 1/2 mile below mine. The owner was told by the local electric co-op that it would cost $30,000-$40,000 to run electric down there. This picture was taken near the entrance to his property. My camp is over the top of the hill on the right. This is a named township road.
Eh...wot?

That shotgun shack pictured looks to be about 200 sq ft. The former town I lived in required a minimum 700 sq ft.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.
