I grabbed a large granite bolder out of my woods with a Bobcat and grapple for landscaping and after it was cleaned I have noticed it's a Native American grindstone. When it was sitting there it had a bowl shape on the top that is ground very smooth. The rest of the bolder is very ruff, so it was not ground smooth naturally. They used it to grind nuts, grain and other things while preparing food.

You should go back where you found it and pick up the pestles that go with it. You may be able to get over a thousand dollars for the complete set if you can deliver it. That seems to be the going rate for large, well used, good liking mortars like that.
Keith It could have been moved out of the field when it was cleared in the last 200 years. The glacier dumped lots of those big rocks right here and they moved lots of them to farm the ground. I will look and pay attention now because they would have moved those stones as well.

Very unique. Like the colour. I would put it somewhere that would make a nice decor, or maybe as a nice base for one of your carvings . It weighs 5 or 6 hundred pounds. My wife would get mad if I brought it in the house with my Bobcat.

Pretty cool. I hope some wokie doesn't come bringing the law to impound it. They get serious about "archeological" finds...

A fantastic find! Please search the area for other artifacts. You may find a treasure even more than you already found.

I will say though as a history buff, atleast record a general location, with date and time. Lots of cool stuff found over the years with no sort of info as to where it came from.

Any idea what tribe(s) were in the general area? Indiana was the historic homeland of many Native American tribes including the Shawnee, Miami, Wea, Potawatomi, Delaware, Wyandot, Kickapoo, Piankashaw, Chickasaw and others. These tribes were removed from the state through a series of treaties in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
