Headed to Fort Peck next week with a Mule Deer tag in pocket. Seems to be a divided subject on most hunting forums where I’ve came across the topic. A Buddy was pointed that direction by another individual he met hunting in another state, they had had good success two different years. Anybody have any experience in this part of the world? The scenery looks amazing! We are staying on the south side of the lake.

Watch out for the gumbo if it rains huh.

Never hunted up there but camped and a fishing trip.

With rain and a 5th wheel camper had to stay a extra day.
And had a blast, but still a gumbo mess getting out. laugh

Good country up there.

Let me sugar coat this

You'll find all the deer you want if you can walk. Eastern montana is a road hunters dream. If you can leave all the lazies behind and walk 1/2 mile or more you'll be in the deer. Google earth of OnX some bedding areas. North facing wooded stuff is always great because they need the cover and block the heat in the summer. In my experience they hang in that zone until after the rut which is late Nov. Bump around those places and you'll see them. Mule deer aren't the sharpest and provide lots of shots. That said, don't expect a monster. If you see a 4x4 with eye guards and its wider than the ears that's a start, but this aint Utah. Be realistic about the bucks out here. Shooting to 300 can get you close to anything. The terrain allows you a tactical advantage to get close. The last buck I shot was 11 paces in its bed with a bow. You'll look out and say, wow that's so far away. But usually if you can see an animal with the naked eye it under 20 minutes away and you'll have a hard time seeing anything that's more than 45 min away. Fast walk is 3ish miles per hour for instance. So don't trick yourself saying its too far away. Good luck
