A little background story,

I got my bobcat tag this year in Wisconsin after several years of playing the points. I knew that getting one in Southwest Wisco would be tough, but they're here. I do a lot of coyote hunting at night with thermal imaging and have had luck calling them in so the thought of being able to tag one is exciting. That's why, at 31 years old, I decided to take up trapping. I figured that it would help supplement my efforts in putting a cat on the wall. So, I ordered a couple dozen Bridgers and went to work. Coyote trapping opened last weekend, but my bobcat season doesn't start until December 26th. I figured this would be plenty of time to hone in some skill on the trap line. I set 16 traps on a farm that I have killed many coyotes on by calling. With as dry as it's been and being busy with my normally job plus the farm, I haven't had much time to scout, but I know where the dogs are at generally. In the first week I haven't managed to catch one single coyote. 18 coon 1 possum and one badger. I figure it's just a waiting game, some of the dirt holes have been worked but nothing major. This morning checking traps, I walk up on this beaut:

The spectrum of emotion that went through me is unexplainable. Bobcats haven't been seen on this farm but were seen not too far away. Caught and held by 1 toe and walked away a bit confused at what had just happened. Here's to hoping that luck follows me into my season, and that the coyotes I'm after finally show up.

That's a nice cat. Congrats.

It felt like Christmas when ya came up on it didnt it?
On the yote sets. Try using s couple different lures.
We often do that and we feel it upset the odds in our favor.

We like last Step 2 and northwest special.

Good luck

You've done well.

Nice catch. It stinks that you had to release him even though you have a tag. The only thing worse is being closer to the season. I had to release one within a week of the season starting a few years back.

Eh...wot?

I've caught the same cat more than a few times. You might see that one again.
