I’ve got several of those rifles and had the same issue. Found a good gunsmith who did a trigger job and they are about 3 lbs and very smooth. I love my Rugers but one drawback is a availability of drop in triggers. I’d look for another gunsmith or I can give you the name of the one I’ve used multiple times. He charges $50 and takes about 4 weeks. I dropped one off last week.

I have had some triggers replaced and tuned by a gunsmith. Others where a Timney or other replacement was not available have had a gunsmith do a “trigger job” to improve the factory trigger. Usually had this done in conjunction with something else to improve a firearm. Night and day difference after the trigger work.
I had a fantastic gunsmith who lived in Montana. It was worthwhile sending guns to him for improvements. Some guns were routine upgrades. Others were hot rod upgrades. Unfortunately he died young. He kept good records so his wife returned a couple guns.
Check trigger pull on the rifle. Look at the creep. Feel the crumbling decay to break. A good trigger has minimal travel, no creep, a sharp break, and appropriately light pull.

Interesting. It must be something with the older model. My M77 .204 has a trigger that feels like silk pajamas.

Hah! That's what I'm after, silk pajamas. In fact, I have often said the trigger on that rifle is the best "out of the box" trigger I've ever seen. Goldnut and I went to the range one day and I let him shoot my .204. After the first shot he turned to me and said,"I wasn't expecting that". I'm wondering if a new trigger group from a more modern rifle would do the job? Just spit balling here.

Interesting. It must be something with the older model. My M77 .204 has a trigger that feels like silk pajamas. I bought mine in 1990. It was definitely to stiff.

Read the reviews on the link. Works better on some rifles than others. Can require some fitment. If your handy shouldn’t be a problem.

Is the Timney replacement pretty easy? I'd hate to screw this up. Never replaced or tweaked a trigger before. I love everything else about that gun. I found the same model but in .338 WM in my local store's rack the other day. I had a worse trigger pull than mine. I haven't done one on the ruger m77 MKI but they usually can provide you a link to a video on how to do it
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Your gun should have the adjustable trigger. I have owned 3 of the Tang/77's and the one I have left has a small Allen screw on the bottom of the trigger and is visible and accessible right inside the trigger guard. Easy to adjust with a small Allen wrench.

Yep adjustable if its a tang safety. I bought a new ruger about 1995. Then bought a timney trigger when I saw how sorry the new one was. You have to file it to fit. I did mine. Have to be careful. File it to much and its dangerous. I think the new ones may not need fitted.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
