How do you make squirrel edible. Ate one once as a kid and thought I was going to have to like my hind end to get the taste out of my mouth. We have red and grey squirrels here where I live in North Dakota. Is there a difference in edibility? Maybe I can add a question. How many squirrels does it take to make a meal?

Most species of squirrel weigh 2 lbs or less .So you would usually have less than a lbs of meat once it was cooked and the bones where removed Some people eat the meat by itself and many others make a meal by mixing it with vegetables or noodles

Good memories in this thread. Tramping around with my 22/.410 Stevens as a kid. I chased after the small game. Life was simpler back then.

A poor cook can ruin anything. Lately my wife puthe then in the crock pot sprinkled with garlic salt nothing else added. It depends on how many your feeding and how you serve it. For my family of 5 5 or 6 with 2 side.

I'd have to opine that ptarmigan and chukar are my favorites. Probably in part because I rarely see anybody else hunting them. My idea of a good hunt is not seeing other people and not hearing any other shots.

We have red and grey squirrels here where I live in North Dakota. Is there a difference in edibility? If you're talking red aka pine squirrel then yes! If you mean red aka fox squirrel, then no. I've never known anyone to eat the little pine squirrels. Grays and fox squirrels are the ones you want to eat and they're delicious. If the squirrel you ate was nasty, I'm betting it was a pine squirrel. Go shoot a few grays and fry up the legs and I know you'll love it.

Muskrats and geese are at the top of my list. I like walking for bunnies on a cold September evening too.

Nice picture ! I always squirrel hunting with a muzzleloader would be fun Squirrel hunting is what started me on muzzleloaders. I had hunted them with a shotgun, then switched to a scoped 22, finally a iron sight 22. I wanted more challenge. Being a history buff, and after reading an article on muzzleloaders for squirrels, I bought my first muzzleloader, a caplock 32. Its been a passion since. The gun in the pic is a 48 inch barreled 20 gage smoothbore. I was out for rabbits that day, but won't pass on squirrels.

We have red and grey squirrels here where I live in North Dakota. Is there a difference in edibility? Don't know where you're at in ND, west or east. I've heard squirrel from the western or Rocky Mountain states taste different because they eat pine cone seeds. Squirrel around here eat oak acorns. And field corn if they can get it. Also, I try to be selective, shooting only small grays. Breaded fried squirrel and gravy made out of small grays are mighty tasty. Old reds, foxes and grays are tough. Old reds, you about have to run them through the crockpot to get them tender enough to eat.
