Hello, I am new to the trapping world and looking to get a handful of traps to start me off. From recommendation the 1 3/4 foothold seems to be a great all round trap to start with.

I really want to catch anything I can in my area (Southern Ontario, within legal limits and proper traps of course). Mainly looking at coyotes, skunks, coons, opposum, etc. 30 acre farm next to a wildlife conservation so decent foot traffic here.

So just wondering what people here tend to use the most, the go-to's for your trap line, etc.!

Thanks

Think there was a recent thread about your country having specific traps you can use. May want to look at that first then pose the question “out of these traps, which do you prefer?”

My favorite go to all purpose trap is an MB550 closed jaw.

For me it’s an MB 650 or an MB 550 , but I’m trapping coyotes. These traps will hold all of your targets but the wide off set jaws should let some of them slip away if you get my drift. I set a heavy 4# pan and don’t seem to have any misses . I think it’s because I’m catching everything up high on the leg . All of that being said I feel I would be doing you a dis service if I steered you away from an MB 450 or 550 .
Good luck,
Don

I have a list of legal ones already, but I'm curious in terms of which traps are people actually using out there. And I of course would get the closest legal version available in my country.

MJ 600 Sterling is now my main trap. I use MB 550 where I think there is a chance of them getting run over.

The first traps that I bought were the Bridger #2 Dogless 2 coil offsets and I love them, I feel comfortable that they would keep a muskrat all the way up to a coyote in them. I run blind sets with them in trails for raccoons and have always held them except for the couple of times that coyotes stole them out of the set.

I have held skunks, coons, opossums, and people have held coyotes but I haven't been able to catch one yet.

Can you explain how a coyote stole your trap . I am guessing you had it staked sown and they pumped it out?

Bridger 1 3/4....I prefer regular jaws. They are good for everything from muskrats to coyote. Most common land traps today come with too much pan tension to be all around traps.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Right now it would be Bridger #3 4 coil with outside lamination. I have set these more than any.

I meant that a coyote stole a raccoon out of my trap, I have never been able to catch a coyote no matter my efforts.

Mostly cats but I've set and caught coons and coyotes in them. I think they're a little big for coon but they've performed well. I forgot to mention offset jaws are required here.

You actually had a coyote take a coon out of a trap? The only thing down here that’ll touch a coon or possum down here is a buzzard.
