My wifes parents looked into it a couple years ago. It was going to cost $40,000 to put in enough panels to cover what they used on a daily basis. So $40,000 divided by their monthly bill made no sense to put it in. I'm sure costs have come down and there's probably money available somewhere.

What company? Just talked to Solar Pals a couple weeks ago....seemed like it was kinda a wash with the guaranteed longevity/cost savings. Although if they outlast that, and electric goes up exponentially, they would probably be worth it. We just didn't pull the trigger.

Do your homework. I did the calculation without panel efficiency loss and my pay back was 19 years.

I wouldn’t put anything on my roof. No way I would pay that much money for something that might save you money.

When you’re doing the math don’t forget to do some checking and see if you get some tax breaks from the state or federal gov for putting it in, I think there are some significant savings to be had there

It's the incentives from the electric utilities or directly from the states that make it financially possible. But, those programs are always subject to change. We did two big solar fields at work 10 years ago. At the time, SRECS were trading at $600. We did a very conservative calculation at $300 thinking they might go down someday. As soon as we turned the panels on, SRECS dropped to $150. We will probably break even.

One common way to install solar is with a power purchase agreement. Somebody else owns the panels, they worry about maintenance, and they pay you a fee every month for having them on your property. The problem is that this makes things very complicated if you plan to sell your home in the next 25 years. Part of the improvements on your property isn't yours and the power purchase company has to approve letting the new owners take over the lease and they hold all the cards in negotiating because the panels are already there.

Federal tax credit, cant remember the percentage, but the guy told me it would be 14K the system was gonna cost 75K. Problem is, you cannot forget to forward that to the lender, cause the TC was negated from the loan.

Scott, you might want to look into having the panels put on the ground. It's cheaper and you can get more and heavier panels, that work better. A friend of mine had ground panels put in around 10 years ago and is going to add more, to sell more electricity to the power company. The solar panels are around 20' by 40' now, with a pretty good angle on them.
