Got back after dark and the chicken wagon door was open. 6 hens roosted on the glider in the yard, which was odd. The dog knew something was up and alerted me. Shot 2 coon in the wagon. They were eating eggs. The rest of the chickens were on roost in the wagon. No chickens harmed. Good to hear it was just eggs. Coons are getting in everything here too. One of the reasons I don't free range my birds.

Update. While I was away at work my boys 9 and 12 got to work at home. They set a few traps, and caught a few. They also started driving the farm after dark and nailed a few with either a.22 or 20g. They took both. My first night back on my rounds to lock up chickens and feed other stock a opossum made the mistake of walking out. My 12 year old hit it with his .22. That one turned out to have bonus points , more of. 7 for one shot type thing.
Tonight the battery on the light was dead. It getting later and hopefully the fawns are big enough thay will get out of the way now so it will be time to do some bush hogging. That will make it expose the varmints more.
One of the boys air gun a rabbit in the garden from 50 yards also. Lots of varmints this year.

I have to use an electric fence around my chicken coop and garden (not a battery one but direct hookup to 110). I wrap raw bacon around the wire, shocks the tar out of bears and coons. I know when a bear tried the bacon at night as there are for divots of sod there in the morning. I like that plan ! Love to see it LIVE ! Likely a little urine and spray of manure there too ! My neighbor used strips of aluminum siding smeared with peanut butter to "teach" the deer at his garden. Seemed to train them quite well. Thanks

I can't free range chickens or turkeys here. Not because of the coons but because of the bears. Woman totaled her car at the end of my driveway 2 nights ago, hit a big bear. Bear got up and walked away!! Have not seen any buzzards so he must have survived. I have to use an electric fence around my chicken coop and garden (not a battery one but direct hookup to 110). Eric When is the last time they had a bear hunting season in NJ ?

Something got one of my hens last night in the coop. All that was missing was the head. I suspect a coon. Possum will do that too. Just the head.

Lat year at this time I had a neighbor lose her favorite rooster to raccoons so this year she asked me to put out a few traps for them since she has chicks. Took out 3 coons in two nights and she's very happy with my results.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

I've kept wire up for bears for years, but the bacon idea is brilliant!
