I have used a big C clamp on regular steel jaws. I don't know how they would work on cast jaws.

On my cast jawed traps, like victor 3n’s, I cut the clevis (?) holding the chain to the spring. Then I drilled a hole in the frame(slightly off center) and added a j-hook to attach the chain. Center swiveled with only the cost of a j-hook and right size drill bit(assuming one has the drill etc) Not a 3n but you get the pic

I like wide face on the old cast jaws. Most cast jaws, other than 3Ns and 4Ns, can be removed with the trap jaw tool. I have also used brake spring pliers to remove trap jaws. Alot of the old Victors had short jaw tips which helps in getting them out. I bubble tip them after reassembling.
I leave the chain on the spring, but I have bought a couple of long springs that had be converted using the Paws-I-Trip center locator. They crimp on, no cutting, dismantling, or welding required.

Well they got them In without cutting the base plate so the jaws should come out with out cutting the base plate.

On a lot of the cast jaw traps, you will have to cut the base plate to get the jaws out without breaking them. Then weld the base back together and add a baseplate. And that class was the correct answer.

I just did this last night! I compressed my long spring with vise grips, then placed the jaws straight down into a bench vise and tightened it slowly until I was able to get 1 end of the jaw(s) out of the frame, then loosened the vise and you’re golden! To put the jaws back in, I placed them side by side as they would be in a sprung trap and tightened the vise with one end of the jaws already in the frame, when I had them compressed enough to get the other end in the frame I lined the jaw tips up with the holes in the frame and slowly loosened the vise. I’ve also seen C clamp style welders vise grips used with good results. Hope this helps! That works on regular jaws, but cast jaws are a completely different story
