its a hyena, there are 4 different types of hyenas, looks like a stripped hyena. I did a little research. It is a striped hyena. They do look like an Aardwolf, but MUCH bigger.

Our professional hunter told us not to touch them after killing them Did he give a reason?

I really like videos of shooting hyenas at night. Thankful that we only have coyotes roaming the pastures to worry about and don't have to protect the livestock from such nightmarish creatures.
If I had one of those mounted, I'd hang it in the bathroom. Would scare the crap out every day.

I have always been fascinated with hyenas.
They are in a realm of their own. Not dog, wuff, Aaard wuff, dingo, wild dog, none of those.
If I had to describe them in appearance , I'd say a powerful mix between wolverine and wuff.
This one is a Brown Hyena. Not striped, which is small and shy , opposite of their large cousins.
I always thought whoever named the Brown could have had lots better imagination. Those bright leg stripes and the long fluffy cape and side fur, sometimes complete with strong suggestions of a diamond , just as a wolverine.
The Brown is second heaviest to the Spotted, which take the cake in known actions and 'tudes . From 190 to 200 lbs , they are a force to recon with.
Their uphill lope so much reminds me of wolverine , in a way.
Interestingly, I have read throughout time , of those who have had hyenas as estate pets and guard "dogs" .
I think, in the book " I Married Adventure" , the author , in her bio, had one as her constant companion. He was well-mannered, quiet, smart, loved to fly in her plane, and was relentlessly fierce in protecting her when she had him in the bush as she explored or hunted. She said he was the best guard she ever had , bar none, over any dog.
I have always wanted to illustrate a biologist's report , of every kind of hyena , in colour, as I did the coyote types with the wuff , with our beloved Jack's approval and blessing of the finished.
I have wanted to meet one, hopefully someday I shall.

... what on earth is going on in that second pic?... is it customary to consummate a successful hunt over there ?

... what on earth is going on in that second pic?... is it customary to consummate a successful hunt over there ? Nature musta called that ole boy on that fateful day, but who am I to judge what someone else identifies as? I recon God will figure that part out.
