So the Army is going to scrap the M4/M16 in favor of a Sig Sauer made rifle.
So what are the odds that the now obsolete rifles will be made available for purchase by the people who have already paid for them (tax payers)?

0% chance, those are the scary “assault rifles”. If the govt handed those out, they would not be able to try and just bankrupt private manufacturers. Of course they have shown that they are more than willing to bankrupt themselves, I guess who knows…..

if you pay attention they basically built a New DMR rifle Designated marksman rifle then said it is the new rifle then only ordered enough to supply DMRs
it is a .277 short action 80Kpsi cartride basically it is almost a 270 win but in a short action with a 16 inch barrel and suppressor it is paired with a smart optic and the total package without ammo is around 12 pounds
I see this being for active combat troops and everyone in a support position is going to be running a M4 variant probably 14.5 inch barrels
this is better answering the how do we keep ahead on long contact distances while most of our possible opponents are running 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 how do we outrange them

Go to the "Civilian marksmanship program" website, then go to the sales program. not much AR related there which is almost a little surprising because you know more than half of service rifle competitors are running AR platform rifles some 223 77gr match ammo possibly a rear sight elevation wheel no barrels or furniture

Don't forget those are all full auto, likely they'll be sent to some "Ally", like maybe the Ukraine.

sell the uppers and BCG only the lower is a MG machine gun
they sell parts kits all the time of de-milled MG
sell them to a company who bids the highest , let them destroy the lowers and sell with new semi auto lowers.
once an MG always an MG only applies to the receiver.

IMO M16's will still be used in non combat situations.
While the M16 was being issued in Viet Nam, WWII M14's were still used for Basic Combat Training. Reserves and NG were even using WWI M1's.
