Mathematical mean is not always statistically significant when making such determinations. It would likely be more helpful to view the data as a mathematical distribution across a bell curve and discount the trailing and leading tails as outliers... the shape of the curve would then determine if (when measured against a marker value like IQ) how much of the remaining distribution lies to the left of that marker.

It would likely be more helpful to view the data as a mathematical distribution across a bell curve and discount the trailing and leading tails as outliers... the shape of the curve would then determine if (when measured against a marker value like IQ) how much of the remaining distribution lies to the left of that marker. Keep that metric system up there where it belongs!

I am actually right on the US border and I work in construction so I only use metric when absolutely necessary.
Since all our news is out of Detroit here, everyone talks about temperature in degrees Fahrenheit

I mean, that is how averages work. Half of all people in the US are fatter than average. Half of all men have a smaller than average......brain. Half of all women are uglier than average. Half of all trappers are stinkier than the average trapper. Half of all Ford owners have to fix their truck more than the average Ford owner.
Misleading statistics gets more fun when the sample size is one. For example, my wife is the ugliest woman I've ever kissed, and I'm the most abusive man she's ever been married to.
