As with many nations or "empires" if you will Russia has gone through some really huge cycles of good, bad and ugly. It seems however that Russia seems to drop lower and rise slower than many that go through cycles. Russia is a quite highly educated nation when compared to many nations so there seems to be something holding them back more than many and it does not seem to make any difference if they are Communist, Socialist or Authoritarian. WW 11 set them back more than many nations and the huge loss of life was not only German military losses. Millions died of starvation due to policies to beat Hitler and also to bring suffering to those not in line with Stalin's Russia. Not surprising to me that purposely destroying non military property and assets and killing civilians as they have been the recipients of much of that themselves. Resentments many times are never really lost.

The Warsaw Pact was the same agreement by communist/socialist countries.

George H. W. Bush along with many other nations leaders was able to get the Warsaw Pact disbanded under the agreement that NATO would disband also.

NATO did not disband and in fact increased. Those member countries are getting closer to the Russian border by default of membership.

So Putin was lied to and NATO keeps encroaching on his border.

I'm not taking up for Putin by any means, but it is hard for me to fault him for something I would probably do also. I don't like what is happening and wish it could be settled at a negotiation table but, as was stated previously, Putin is going crazy.
