I recently traveled to Montana where I grew up, to chase and photograph this bucklist bird. Was able to spend a morning on a lek with 1/2 a dozen birds. Populations of Sage grouse populations in this area have fallen drastically in recent years.

We happened on a Lek once while Prairie dog shooting . we were hearing this funny strange noise coming from over the hill, we crawled over to take a look , there they were. We watched for quite a while.

Great photos.

I hunted them in Centennial Valley in SW Montana in the 70s. Daily limit was 5 birds. Great hunting and decent eating too. Cleaning them was another deal. Smelliest guts ever..... must be their diet. They aren't doing well anywhere it seems.

One more reason to keep after the coyotes. Great pics.

I’m not a expert on them, but had a Sage grouse biologist tell me one time that Bobcats were really hard on them in the big Sage country. It was his feeling that coyote control work was actually detrimental to Sage grouse as it allowed the bobcat populations to increase. With that said it was only 1 guys opinion and I’m not sure what his motives were, could have easily been a greenie.

Great pics! They are wonderful birds. I hunted them twice around 2005 when the push to list them was getting intense. Our lesser prairie chicken is in the same boat as far as population goes.
