The movie was good.Amazing story and its to bad they placed so much blame on the captain.
I was watching some shark videos tonight with my 5 year old grandson and in oneof the videos they mentioned this ordeal and said about 80 sailors were killed by sharks.
How have I never heard this. Story before. Talking about emotional wow.
Really? It's very well known these days. Has been since about 1950. It was even in the blockbuster movie "Jaws". Quint, the captain of the fishing boat had the Indianapolis tattoo removed from his arm. At least three movies and countless documentaries have been made about it also.

Dang Marty, that was purely amazing. Those guys are some of our greatest heroes for what they went through. It's to bad that skipper got clocked because he didn't zig zag his ship in war time Maneuvers. When they d said there were no war ships in the area..all I can say is I love every (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) one of them for fighting for our country and the freedom that it stands for. Keep em coming

My Dad had a friend with whom I became acquainted. He told me the story in these general terms. He knew the cargo they carried. He survived the sinking of the Indianapolis and was in the water with the sharks. He witnessed the men being killed and eaten. He was eventually picked up and put on a British ship where he got clean dry clothing and a hot meal. Almost immediately that ship was sunk and he went back into the water. Again more sharks and more men killed and eaten. Once again rescued and pulled out of the area for debriefing and orders to not tell anyone what happened and told an alternative cover story. He was a good man.

Guess I don't watch much TV. I was about 6 when jaws came out so did not pick up on that when I saw it at a friend's because mom would not let me watch it. Hard to hear about it in the woods, work, or out on the farm.

My aunts brother was on that ship and did no survive. Loose lips sink ships, and so does on a need to know basis. Wars suck in so many ways I guess the world will never learn. To bad the politicians could not just kill each other and voters watch.

Crazy how the Titanic became a world wide sad tale, granted it had women and children or board but it was poor accidental, over confidence and maybe human error. However pretty small when you consider the Lusitania and all the ships that went down in battle and tens of thousands lost that you never hear about mostly forgotten.

Read the book: ABANDON SHIP about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis for the full, true story.
1,100 men went in the water on the night of the sinking and around 300 were saved and sharks took the rest.
Captain McVeigh took most of the blame but the sinking was covered up so the true story was never told regarding the negligence of the hierarchy of the U.S. Navy.
Great book that gives a blow by blow account of the sinking and the aftermath that ended with McVeigh's suicide.
A tragic story about the high price of the war in the pacific.

You need to add another zero to that number.

Read about it the first time when I was 10 or so. Probably why I hate sharks so much. To this day I can’t stand floating in any large body of water. Gives me the heebie-jeebies. Dang!!
Everything the left touches it destroys

My very good friend Lou was a navy man ... Lou died last year from cancer , but before he went , he gave me a book .. IN HARMS WAY , by Doug Stanton
He told me , that he couldn't read it ...I didn't understand what he meant , until I read this book I'm not a big reader , but once you start this book you can't put it down ..
The heroism of those boys that lost their lives is extraordinary
