Article said it was over 10K ft down! i wonder if the ice shelf loss' made it available for discovery. What was the name of the expedition leader that had his ship ice locked for a few years in Canada looking for the NW Passage?

About 20 years ago I was in Washington D.C. for a conference. Had some free time so walked to the National Geographic Society headquarters. They had a display on the Shackleton expedition. I actually got to touch one of the lifeboats from the Endurance. As part of the display they had a sextant that you had to use for navigation on a projected, hazy day. Would have been very tough thing to do.

Proud to have the privilege of touching that boat.

X 2. I especially like what Shackleton had to say about the arrival on Elephant Island.

They say you can drop a sextant twice; once on deck and once over the side.

I don't remember his name, but the wife just read a book about that expedition and was telling me about it a couple weeks ago.

GPS is nice but can fail, I read that navy now is teaching the old methods of navigation as a back up and to verify coordinates. Amazing how explorers use to navigate and how accurate it was. I have read that coordinates taken by the Corps of Discovery Lewis and Clark are spot on. David Thompson that worked for the Hudson Bay explored most of Canada and Northwestern US prior to Lewis and Clark and was incredible at his cartography skills did most of it on foot and canoe.
