Last night I had a friend in the shop with a J ROSE bear trap so I got some pictures. The trap originated in an Idaho mining camp.

Both Springs stamped JROSE

Trap is old and has been repaired. Cross was broken off and pan replaced.

The original cross looks to have been held in place with a forged cap. I assume there was a rivet also that got drilled out to bolt on the replacement.

Jaw posts and nuts look original.

Does anyone have more info? Are there other J ROSE traps in collections?

No info in any of my resources but it’s an interesting looking trap- the replacement pan doesn’t do the rest of the trap justice though. Might need to give Tom Parr a call on that one, he may have something on it.

The spring workmanship on this trap is impressive. It would be fun to see one with the original cross.

I agree Pete. Some of the hand forged traps I see are works of art!

Yep... Cool trap... The maker must of had enough pride in his work to stamp the springs...
